Contenuti The course gives an introduction to certain aspects of the approach anthropologists have adopted. Part of the course deals with anthropological studies of internal and international migration.
Testi di riferimento Non.Italian students can agree with the teacher alternative texts or use the following (many of which are also available in English or French): C. Capello, Le prigioni invisibili. Etnografia multisituata della migrazione marocchina, F. Angeli, Milano, 2008; The second section of chapter 1 of Robert Deliège, Storia dell’antropologia (Il Mulino, Bologna 2008) entitled “L’evoluzionismo in antropologia” and the final section “Il contributo e i limiti dell’antropologia evoluzionista”; The Introduction to J. Obiettivi formativi The course gives students an idea of the way anthropologists have approached social phenomena, both in “exotic” and in more familiar contexts. It explains anthropologists’ rejection of evolutionist perspectives, and why this question is important even today. It explains the discussion around the concept of culture, and explains the criticisms of “culturalist” explanations of social phenomena. It gives examples of anthropological research on migration – in both classical and contemporary studies. It explains the merits of a description of “social structure” which focuses on the “micro” or “meso” level of kinship, friendship and social networks.
Prerequisiti No formal requirements
Metodi didattici Lessons students are advised to attend
Altre informazioni Apart from the texts, students must use the material on the DIR website and photocopies in the department library Students who do not attend lessons regularly may find it useful to consult a manual of cultural anthropology (ask the teacher for advice).
Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento Written exam (90 minutes, , three open questions), followed by an oral discussion. This oral part usually starts with points in the student’s written text which are not clear or insufficiently developed, and then touches on other aspects of the course
Programma esteso The course introduces students to some aspects of a social antrhopological approach to the explanation of social phenomena. Part of the course covers anthropological research on immigration. - For the part on evolutionism. The second section of the first chapter of Robert Deliège’s book, Storia dell’antropologia (Il Mulino, Bologna 2008) entitled “L’evoluzionismo in antropologia” and the last section on “Il contributo e i limiti dell’antropologia evoluzionista” provide information on nineteenth century evolutionist perspectives. The sections on Morgan, Tylor and Frazer give basic information on three influential nineteenth-century scholars working in an evolutionist perspective. For the relevance of anthropologists’ rejection of evolutionism even today, see the Introduction to Jack Goody Il furto della storia OR the Introduction to his Capitalismo e modernità: il grande dibattito. - The first three chapters (“La stregoneria è un fenomeno organico e ereditario”, “Il concetto di stregoneria spiega gli avvenimenti sfavorevoli” and “Coloro che sono colpiti da disgrazie cercano gli stregoni fra i loro nemici”) of E. Evans-Pritchard’s book, Stregoneria, oracoli e magia tra gli Azande (Raffaello Cortina Editore, Milano 2002) show how one anthropologist made sense of beliefs and practices which on the surface appear totally irrational and totally distant from our own. Students do not need to master all the details of these beliefs but need to understand the basic intellectual questions posed by Evans-Pritchard. - The following brief texts are useful for understanding the problems connected with explanations in terms of “culture”: D. Cuche, "Culture degli immigrati” and "Culture d'origine", in D. Cuche, La nozione di cultura nelle scienze sociali, Il Mulino, Bologna 2003; G. Baumann, Etnicità, sangue o vino?, chapter 5 of L'enigma multiculturale, Il Mulino, Bologna 2007; V. Maher, De-codificando le parole chiave, in V. Maher, a cura di, Questioni di etnicità, Rosenberg e Sellier, Torino 1994; R. Boudon, entry on "Cultura e culturalismo" in R. Boudon, F. Bourricaud, Dizionario critico di sociologia, Armando, Roma 1991. - The Mayers’ essay on “Red” and “school” Xhosa in V. Maher ed. Questioni di etnicità (Rosenberg and Sellier, Torino 1994) provides an interesting description of rural migrants to a South African city who adopt very different attitudes towards “tradition”. - C. Capello, Le prigioni invisibili. Etnografia multisituata della migrazione marocchina, F. Angeli, Milano, 2008 is an interesting anthropological description of the social situation and beliefs of young Moroccans who wish to migrate from Casablanca and Khouribga, and of some who have actually managed to migrate and live in Turin. This “multi-sited” study is interesting for many reasons but is particularly useful on the “culture of migration” and on feelings of frustration and marginalization both in Morocco and in Italy. - P. Cingolani, Romeni d’Italia. Migrazioni, vita quotidiana e legami transnazionali, Il Mulino, Bologna 2009 is a bi-national study of Romanian migrants in Turin and in the small town of Marginea in north-east Romania. Interesting for many aspects of migration from post-communist Europe, on “integration” in the labour market and the housing market in Turin, and on effects of migration in Marginea. - Boissevain’s essay on “brokers” is an influential piece on how people may exploit their intermediary position linking different categories of people and thus earn political or personal profit; - D. Perrotta, Vecchi e nuovi mediatori. Storia, geografia ed etnografia del caporalato in agricoltura, “Meridiana”, n.79, 2014 is an account which uses the concept of “broker” to explain patterns of labour organization in agriculture;

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento Written exam (90 minutes, , three open questions), followed by an oral discussion. This oral part usually starts with points in the student’s written text which are not clear or insufficiently developed, and then touches on other aspects of the course
Programma esteso The course introduces students to some aspects of a social antrhopological approach to the explanation of social phenomena. Part of the course covers anthropological research on immigration. - For the part on evolutionism. The second section of the first chapter of Robert Deliège’s book, Storia dell’antropologia (Il Mulino, Bologna 2008) entitled “L’evoluzionismo in antropologia” and the last section on “Il contributo e i limiti dell’antropologia evoluzionista” provide information on nineteenth century evolutionist perspectives. The sections on Morgan, Tylor and Frazer give basic information on three influential nineteenth-century scholars working in an evolutionist perspective. For the relevance of anthropologists’ rejection of evolutionism even today, see the Introduction to Jack Goody Il furto della storia OR the Introduction to his Capitalismo e modernità: il grande dibattito. - The first three chapters (“La stregoneria è un fenomeno organico e ereditario”, “Il concetto di stregoneria spiega gli avvenimenti sfavorevoli” and “Coloro che sono colpiti da disgrazie cercano gli stregoni fra i loro nemici”) of E. Evans-Pritchard’s book, Stregoneria, oracoli e magia tra gli Azande (Raffaello Cortina Editore, Milano 2002) show how one anthropologist made sense of beliefs and practices which on the surface appear totally irrational and totally distant from our own. Students do not need to master all the details of these beliefs but need to understand the basic intellectual questions posed by Evans-Pritchard. - The following brief texts are useful for understanding the problems connected with explanations in terms of “culture”: D. Cuche, "Culture degli immigrati” and "Culture d'origine", in D. Cuche, La nozione di cultura nelle scienze sociali, Il Mulino, Bologna 2003; G. Baumann, Etnicità, sangue o vino?, chapter 5 of L'enigma multiculturale, Il Mulino, Bologna 2007; V. Maher, De-codificando le parole chiave, in V. Maher, a cura di, Questioni di etnicità, Rosenberg e Sellier, Torino 1994; R. Boudon, entry on "Cultura e culturalismo" in R. Boudon, F. Bourricaud, Dizionario critico di sociologia, Armando, Roma 1991. - The Mayers’ essay on “Red” and “school” Xhosa in V. Maher ed. Questioni di etnicità (Rosenberg and Sellier, Torino 1994) provides an interesting description of rural migrants to a South African city who adopt very different attitudes towards “tradition”. - C. Capello, Le prigioni invisibili. Etnografia multisituata della migrazione marocchina, F. Angeli, Milano, 2008 is an interesting anthropological description of the social situation and beliefs of young Moroccans who wish to migrate from Casablanca and Khouribga, and of some who have actually managed to migrate and live in Turin. This “multi-sited” study is interesting for many reasons but is particularly useful on the “culture of migration” and on feelings of frustration and marginalization both in Morocco and in Italy. - P. Cingolani, Romeni d’Italia. Migrazioni, vita quotidiana e legami transnazionali, Il Mulino, Bologna 2009 is a bi-national study of Romanian migrants in Turin and in the small town of Marginea in north-east Romania. Interesting for many aspects of migration from post-communist Europe, on “integration” in the labour market and the housing market in Turin, and on effects of migration in Marginea. - Boissevain’s essay on “brokers” is an influential piece on how people may exploit their intermediary position linking different categories of people and thus earn political or personal profit; - D. Perrotta, Vecchi e nuovi mediatori. Storia, geografia ed etnografia del caporalato in agricoltura, “Meridiana”, n.79, 2014 is an account which uses the concept of “broker” to explain patterns of labour organization in agriculture;

Contenuti The course discuss the role played by media communication in the context of the sociological debate and more specifically in reference with the sociology of culture. A first part will focus on classical contributions, from both sociology and cultural studies, in the formation of a sociology of communication. A second part will illustrate the specific interest in a sociological approach to contemporary media. This will be accomplished by constant reference to contemporary communication and media leading scholars. Here are some questions the course will raise and discuss: To what degrees a history of communication technologies and their uses can shed light on history tout court? How media communication produces social change and under which conditions do media inhibit social change? Are digital and social media a tool for social mobility or do they contribute in the maintenance of social inequalities? Are the media an obstacle for traditions or do they provide traditions with new opportunities for development? Which links can be traced among change in information environment, political change and new forms of democratic citizenship? Through which logics and cultural practices do media become tools to discriminate against minorities? And how do media practices contribute in contrasting social exclusion? Which relationship can be drawn between individual identity, collective identity and communication practices? How popular media, social networks and identity can be discussed together?
Testi di riferimento Attendants must study: - Paddy Scannell, “Media and Comunication” – Sage (translation in Italian by il Mulino); Moreover, they are required to study the lecture notes delivered by the Professor, including articles and short book chapters. Non attendants must study three books: 1. Paddy Scannell, “Media and Comunication” – Sage (translated in Italian by il Mulino); 2. David Hesmondhalgh, “Media Production” – The Open University (translated in Italian by Hoepli) 3. One to be selected among the following three: - Danah Boyd, “It’s complicated. The Social Lives of Networked Teens” – www.danah.org (translated in Italian by Lit); - Henry Jenkins, “Convergence culture” – NYU (translated in Italian by Apogeo); - Anthony Elliott e John Urry, “Mobile Lives” – Routledge (translated in Italian by il Mulino).
Obiettivi formativi The main goal is to furnish students with adequate tools allowing them to: - discuss social and institutional transformations using cultural and communication sociology as a reference point (trough affirmed categories and theoretical models); - become familiar with media: being able to discuss media products, their social impact and effects; being able to find relevant processes through correct information and data useful to analyse contemporary communication flows. - Improve in active citizenship by improving their own ability to use media and take awareness of the new communication environment.
Metodi didattici The course will employ a mix of methods, including direct teaching, open discussions, collective analysis of videos and news narratives. Students are recommended to share media texts for open discussions. Attendance of at least 40 hours out of 60 are required to be considered an attendant. Signatures will be taken.
Altre informazioni Videos used for didactical purposes will be given to any student asking for them. The Professor will deliver lector notes including articles and brief book chapters’ copies.
Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento The exam will consist in a 30 minutes discussion. Questions will be both generic and specific. This means students will be required to show their skills in both synthetically framing an issue or a book and go into critical points, using arguments and counter-arguments.
Programma esteso The course discuss the role played by media communication in the context of the sociological debate and more specifically in reference with the sociology of culture. A first part will focus on classical contributions in the formation of a sociology of communication. The classical authors considered for this part of the course will be the following: Karl Marx, Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, Georg Simmel, Robert Merton, George Herbert Mead, Alfred Shutz, Erving Goffman, Harold Garfinkel, Pierre Bourdieu, Michel Foucault, Jurgen Habermas, Stuart Hall e Luc Boltanski. Obviously, only small parts of their complex theorisations will be considered, namely those directly relevant for a sociology of media and communication. The first part is intended as an opportunity to review classical approaches in sociology such as structuralism, functionalism, conflict theories, symbolic interactionism, phenomenology, field theory etc. A second part will illustrate the specific interest in a sociological approach to contemporary media. This will be accomplished by constant reference to contemporary communication and media leading scholars such as Gaye Tuchman, Simon Cottle, Rodney Benson, James Curran, Nick Couldry, Roger Silverstone, Sonia Livingstone, Barbie Zelizer, David Morley, Danah Boyd, William A. Gamson, Manuel Castells, Lilie Chouliaraki. The course here will touch big issues and concepts in communication studies such as mediatization process, media rituals, media logic, news-making and news-management, processes of identity-building through media consumption and production, social media use and network society, social movements in the internet age, the transformations of the public sphere, representations of ethnicity and gender in the media. Three selected videos will be showed and collectively analysed. Moreover, a couple of cases of news circulations in old and new media, off-line and on-line will be narrated and discussed. Those collective analysis and open discussions are conceived in order to review some practical concepts and few theoretical models and understand how to use them heuristically.

Contenuti The course provides theoretical and analytical tools in order to face “ social integration” issue, through sociological literature. Specifically, it equips students with in-depth analysis of the integration notion in migration contexts and the different means of contemporary migration. The question “ Is this person, or this group, integrated?” presents a fundamental problem, i.e. the imagination of the societies as homogeneous and static, each with its own, relatively coherent culture, where people should enter. There is a widespread tendency for the public debate in Italy to take place in a “national cultural” framework, which assumes a world made up of “peoples”. In this perspective it tends to be taken for granted that individuals are all, and to the same degree, linked to their national community, seen as a natural unit. Rather than, it is better asking: “ in which part of the society is he/ she integrating”, and analyse and explain the patterns of inclusion and the inequalities. Regarding the migration issue, we will distinguish between different flows to Italy through quantitative official data. The presence of five million of regular foreign residents will be analysed taking into the account the labour market situation. We will exam, in a sociological perspective, some law elements to understand which kind of integration perspective is present and how has changed . About “mixed migration” and refugees, we will present global, European and Italian data to frame correctly the phenomenon, then we will have a look to the Italian reception system , in particular to its mean and critical issue Sociological mechanisms of the migration per se and the context integration deserve serious attention.

Contenuti The course extends students’ knowledge of the sociology of migration. It focuses especially on the long-term effects of migration and the relationship between migration and local systems of social stratification. And thus on the form which “integration” may take in the market place, in the school system, etc. A part of the course will tackle certain aspects of the migration of refugees and asylum seekers and the relationship of these with other forms of migration

Ramella, a cura di, L’Italia delle migrazioni interne, Donzelli, Roma 2003 The definitive list of texts for the course will be announced at the beginning of the course.
Obiettivi formativi Students should acquire concepts useful for understanding the dynamics of migration and the creation, or non-creation, of “ethnic” inequalities. They should also acquire skills for interpreting quantitative and qualitative data regarding migration and ethnic inequalities.
Prerequisiti There are no formal pre-requisites but the course assumes that students have studied some sociology and some elements of the sociology of migration. Students who have never studied anything related to the sociology of migration are strongly recommended to read an introductory text (e.g., P. Stalker, L’immigrazione, Carocci, 2003, S. Allievi e G. Dalla Zuanna, Tutto quello che non vi hanno mai detto sulle migrazioni, Laterza, Bari 2016, i primi capitoli di M. Ambrosini, Sociologia delle migrazioni, Il Mulino, Bologna 2011, L. Zanfrini, Sociologia delle migrazioni, F. Angeli, 2004)
Metodi didattici Lessons
Altre informazioni Apart from the texts listed above, students must use the materials on the DIR website and photocopies left in the department library
Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento Written exam (1 hour, two open questions) followed by oral discussion. In the oral part, the discussion usually asks about points which are not clear in the students’ written, or insufficiently developed, and then touches on other aspects of the course.
Programma esteso The course extends students knowledge of the sociology of migration. The focus is on the long-term effects of migration and its connections with the local system of social stratification. In this context, the course explores conditions of “integration” (in the labour market, the school system, etc.) of migrants and their children. The debate around the concept of “segmented assimilation” will be explained, and more in general that around the “second generation” in the United States and Europe. Attention will be given to “structural” factors influencing the various dimensions of integration, and in this context cases of internal migration will be discussed and compared with international migration.

Programma esteso The course introduces students to some aspects of a social antrhopological approach to the explanation of social phenomena. Part of the course covers anthropological research on immigration. - For the part on evolutionism. The second section of the first chapter of Robert Deliège’s book, Storia dell’antropologia (Il Mulino, Bologna 2008) entitled “L’evoluzionismo in antropologia” and the last section on “Il contributo e i limiti dell’antropologia evoluzionista” provide information on nineteenth century evolutionist perspectives. The sections on Morgan, Tylor and Frazer give basic information on three influential nineteenth-century scholars working in an evolutionist perspective. For the relevance of anthropologists’ rejection of evolutionism even today, see the Introduction to Jack Goody Il furto della storia OR the Introduction to his Capitalismo e modernità: il grande dibattito. - The first three chapters (“La stregoneria è un fenomeno organico e ereditario”, “Il concetto di stregoneria spiega gli avvenimenti sfavorevoli” and “Coloro che sono colpiti da disgrazie cercano gli stregoni fra i loro nemici”) of E. Evans-Pritchard’s book, Stregoneria, oracoli e magia tra gli Azande (Raffaello Cortina Editore, Milano 2002) show how one anthropologist made sense of beliefs and practices which on the surface appear totally irrational and totally distant from our own. Students do not need to master all the details of these beliefs but need to understand the basic intellectual questions posed by Evans-Pritchard. - The following brief texts are useful for understanding the problems connected with explanations in terms of “culture”: D. Cuche, "Culture degli immigrati” and "Culture d'origine", in D. Cuche, La nozione di cultura nelle scienze sociali, Il Mulino, Bologna 2003; G. Baumann, Etnicità, sangue o vino?, chapter 5 of L'enigma multiculturale, Il Mulino, Bologna 2007; V. Maher, De-codificando le parole chiave, in V. Maher, a cura di, Questioni di etnicità, Rosenberg e Sellier, Torino 1994; R. Boudon, entry on "Cultura e culturalismo" in R. Boudon, F. Bourricaud, Dizionario critico di sociologia, Armando, Roma 1991. - The Mayers’ essay on “Red” and “school” Xhosa in V. Maher ed. Questioni di etnicità (Rosenberg and Sellier, Torino 1994) provides an interesting description of rural migrants to a South African city who adopt very different attitudes towards “tradition”. - C. Capello, Le prigioni invisibili. Etnografia multisituata della migrazione marocchina, F. Angeli, Milano, 2008 is an interesting anthropological description of the social situation and beliefs of young Moroccans who wish to migrate from Casablanca and Khouribga, and of some who have actually managed to migrate and live in Turin. This “multi-sited” study is interesting for many reasons but is particularly useful on the “culture of migration” and on feelings of frustration and marginalization both in Morocco and in Italy. - P. Cingolani, Romeni d’Italia. Migrazioni, vita quotidiana e legami transnazionali, Il Mulino, Bologna 2009 is a bi-national study of Romanian migrants in Turin and in the small town of Marginea in north-east Romania. Interesting for many aspects of migration from post-communist Europe, on “integration” in the labour market and the housing market in Turin, and on effects of migration in Marginea. - Boissevain’s essay on “brokers” is an influential piece on how people may exploit their intermediary position linking different categories of people and thus earn political or personal profit; - D. Perrotta, Vecchi e nuovi mediatori. Storia, geografia ed etnografia del caporalato in agricoltura, “Meridiana”, n.79, 2014 is an account which uses the concept of “broker” to explain patterns of labour organization in agriculture;

Contenuti The course is structured around three major topics: - The first topic, of a general nature, focuses on the nature of an “organisation". The goal is to give the student the tools to master the terminology and the main contents related; - The second topic, more specific, introduces the state of the art and the comparative evolution of the welfare models. The goal is to help students understand the meaning of the NHS regionalisation and to read their own frame of reference; - The third topic, most peculiar, shows how the different professions within the healthcare industry are positioned. The goal is to highlight the type of communication behind each profession, at a national level as well as at an enterprise level.
Testi di riferimento Pignatto A., C. Regazzo - Organization and quality in health and social services - Carocci Editore, Roma 2002
Obiettivi formativi The proposed course is generally designed to guide students and future professionals towards a better understanding of a logic of "organisational responsibilities and resource management”. The course can support professionals as well, helping them develop a more balanced view between the clinical care sphere of their activity and the economic-managerial aspect. In particular, the course aims to: - To deliver theoretical knowledge on the subject of welfare organisations and their comparative models; - Provide clues to a deeper understanding of organisational dynamics within the healthcare system.

For the relevance of anthropologists’ rejection of evolutionism even today, see the Introduction to Jack Goody Il furto della storia OR the Introduction to his Capitalismo e modernità: il grande dibattito. - The first three chapters (“La stregoneria è un fenomeno organico e ereditario”, “Il concetto di stregoneria spiega gli avvenimenti sfavorevoli” and “Coloro che sono colpiti da disgrazie cercano gli stregoni fra i loro nemici”) of E. Evans-Pritchard’s book, Stregoneria, oracoli e magia tra gli Azande (Raffaello Cortina Editore, Milano 2002) show how one anthropologist made sense of beliefs and practices which on the surface appear totally irrational and totally distant from our own. Students do not need to master all the details of these beliefs but need to understand the basic intellectual questions posed by Evans-Pritchard. - The following brief texts are useful for understanding the problems connected with explanations in terms of “culture”: D. Cuche, "Culture degli immigrati” and "Culture d'origine", in D. Cuche, La nozione di cultura nelle scienze sociali, Il Mulino, Bologna 2003; G. Baumann, Etnicità, sangue o vino?, chapter 5 of L'enigma multiculturale, Il Mulino, Bologna 2007; V. Maher, De-codificando le parole chiave, in V. Maher, a cura di, Questioni di etnicità, Rosenberg e Sellier, Torino 1994; R. Boudon, entry on "Cultura e culturalismo" in R. Boudon, F. Bourricaud, Dizionario critico di sociologia, Armando, Roma 1991. - The Mayers’ essay on “Red” and “school” Xhosa in V. Maher ed. Questioni di etnicità (Rosenberg and Sellier, Torino 1994) provides an interesting description of rural migrants to a South African city who adopt very different attitudes towards “tradition”. - C. Capello, Le prigioni invisibili. Etnografia multisituata della migrazione marocchina, F. Angeli, Milano, 2008 is an interesting anthropological description of the social situation and beliefs of young Moroccans who wish to migrate from Casablanca and Khouribga, and of some who have actually managed to migrate and live in Turin. This “multi-sited” study is interesting for many reasons but is particularly useful on the “culture of migration” and on feelings of frustration and marginalization both in Morocco and in Italy. - P. Cingolani, Romeni d’Italia. Migrazioni, vita quotidiana e legami transnazionali, Il Mulino, Bologna 2009 is a bi-national study of Romanian migrants in Turin and in the small town of Marginea in north-east Romania. Interesting for many aspects of migration from post-communist Europe, on “integration” in the labour market and the housing market in Turin, and on effects of migration in Marginea. - Boissevain’s essay on “brokers” is an influential piece on how people may exploit their intermediary position linking different categories of people and thus earn political or personal profit; - D. Perrotta, Vecchi e nuovi mediatori. Storia, geografia ed etnografia del caporalato in agricoltura, “Meridiana”, n.79, 2014 is an account which uses the concept of “broker” to explain patterns of labour organization in agriculture;
