Contenuti The course will be dedicated to the knowledge of the two main forms of mental suffering (which - intentionally - are not going to coincide with the current diagnostic labels): the depressive experiences and the psychotic ones. The latter are usually defined schizophrenic disorders. This knowledge will not only be based on the texts of the "experts by profession" (psychiatrists, psychotherapists, philosophers), but also on the direct testimony of "experts by experience": of those, that is, who have personally experienced these forms of suffering . A lesson will be dedicated also to other forms of mental suffering, such as personality disorders and addictions. A lesson will be devoted to the history of psychiatry, to clear the path through which it has assumed the profile of a medical discipline (despite the considerable differences that separate it from most other medical disciplines). In this same lesson the law of Italian reform and major organizational functions of the Mental Health Department will be presented.
Testi di riferimento Main textbook Seikkula, J. & Arnkil, TE (2014). Open dialogues and anticipations. Helsinki
Obiettivi formativi Special attention, in each lesson, will be placed on presenting - and discussing - the main boundaries that are present in the field of psychiatry activities. In particular: a. the boundary between the individual dimension of mental suffering and the context in which it develops. b. the boundary between understandability and incomprehensibility of these experiences, c. the line between "being (depressed, bipolar, schizophrenic)" and "having (a depression, a bipolar disorder, a schizophrenic disorder)". d. the line between approaches based upon "deficits" and those based upon "resources" e.. the line between "user" and "person", including professional relationships and human relationships, between "to do for" or "to be with" Knowledge of the approaches that provide a full sharing of all stages of the care and therapeutic process with all relevant stakeholders (including family members)

Contenuti Social workers work with immigrant from different countries. It is necessary indeed to get appropriate - categories to understand the reality of contemporary migration, in particularly to Italy - analytical and operative tools for a good professional relation and for making fruitful actions So, it is important to get other “ lens” as regard the widespread national-cultural perspective. It’s easy observing than frequently the so called ethnic penalties - national origin, religion, features – are key to explain integration paths. One usually points ascriptic elements given for granted and unproblematic, rather than analyzing interactions among people and life ambience. Social worker have to exam social position /path, actions and reactions in the receiving country. These depend from relational resources, networks, and immigrant family position. It’s not so much a question of national origin, but other elements have to be taken into account : social networks, job market, neighborhoods, immigrant family specificities. All these aspects will be analyzed with reference to regular immigrants residents in Italy through quantitative and qualitative data and scientific texts. With reference to contemporary mixed migration (forced and voluntary migration) and the issue of asylum seekers, we will spend some time to analyze official data and some elements of law and the reception system. Finally, it will be useful a look at common words as “ethnicity, culture, identity”, and to the so called “entrepreneurs of the fear”, to improve the deconstruction of widespread common sense . Changing “lens” is important for Social Workers to organize the service too.

It is intended as an opportunity to review classical approaches in sociology such as structuralism, functionalism, conflict theories, symbolic interactionism, phenomenology, field theory etc. A second part will illustrate the specific interest in using a sociological approach while debating key issues in communication such as humanitarian representations, migration and gender (specifically in relation to integration and violence). This part of the course will focus on journalism, institutional communication and campaigning on gender and migratory issues.
