Understanding of the concepts and perspectives underlying discourses on "ethnicity"; acquisition of basic knowledge about migrant integration processes also from a gender perspective; ability to look critically at processes of constructing the "other" and in particular at the link between immigration and crime.

The course will be organised in a mixed format. In the first part, fundamental concepts and themes will be introduced through lectures and thematic interventions by other scholars. In the second part, organised in seminar form, the attending students will be invited to present and discuss in class some readings from a list that will be made available by the lecturer.

Supplementary readings for the seminar part of the course will be made available on DIR after the start of the lectures.
Non-attending students are invited to contact the lecturer to arrange the selection of readings for the written paper.

Individual essay (15,000-20,000 characters including spaces), due at least 10 days before the exam, from the list of supplementary readings proposed by the lecturer. The examination will be oral and will focus on the course materials and discussion of the essay. The evaluation will consider: ability to elaborate and write a text using the appropriate terminology; knowledge and comprehension of the fundamental concepts; ability to make connections between the various themes addressed; critical reasoning and argumentation.

2. Identity and recognition: national identity and 'ethnic' identity.
3. Discrimination and racism: origins and transformations.
4. Integration, citizenship, and new subjects of migration.
5. Migration, deviance, and criminalisation: basic concepts, theoretical and political perspectives.

By the end of the course, the student will have acquired the fundamental tools for the critical analysis of the concept of 'ethnicity'; will be able to navigate the processes of othering and discrimination of foreigners; will be able to interpret and critically discuss the link between immigration and crime.
