The course is divided into two thematic modules: the first focuses on Spanish phonology and morphology, also from a contrastive point of view [in comparison with Italian]; the second focuses on contents of Spanish inflectional and derivational morphology.

The course aims at providing students with: 1) theoretical awareness [synchronic, diachronic and diatopic] in Spanish phonology, morphology and morphosyntax, also from a contrastive point of view [in comparison with Italian]; 2) a solid knowledge of inflectional and derivational morphology of Spanish language [and its main processes of word formation]; 3) useful means to recognise, define and comprehend said phenomena [understanding linguistic and extralinguistic related issues and aspects].

Students must have passed the exam of SPANISH LANGUAGE of the 1st year. It is also recommended that they have passed the exam of GENERAL LINGUISTICS [1st year]. A solid knowledge of linguistic and grammatical analysis of Italian is also required.

The acquisition of the course’s theoretical contents and competences will be assessed through a written exam [2 hours], which consists of 3 theoretical questions and 2 practical exercises. *** EVALUATION CRITERIA: In theoretical questions, students must prove that they are able to explain, in a concise form [but with congruity and awareness] the required content, citing consistent examples aimed at illustrating the phenomena, and expressing with precise terminology and property of language. *** An exam will be considered excellent when it demonstrates: an organic view and a deepened knowledge of the themes faced during the course; a great capacity of synthesis/analysis and personal and critical re-elaboration through the use of an abundant number of pertinent examples; clarity of exposition and a great mastery of language and specific lexicon. An exam will be considered good when it demonstrates: a not always deepened and/or occasionally mechanic and mnemonic knowledge of the contents of the course; a discrete capacity of synthesis/analysis and re-elaboration through the use of a few examples; a fairly clear exposition and the use of a correct but not always appropriate language and specific lexicon. An exam will be considered sufficient when it demonstrates: a basic knowledge of the contest of the course, often expressed in a mnemonic way; struggle on producing an efficient synthesis/analysis and the use of only partially pertinent examples; difficulty on the exposition and use of an only partially correct and appropriate language and lexicon. An exam will be considered insufficient when it presents at least one of the following characteristics: significant knowledge gaps and/or exposition that consists on merely reciting the notions or definitions, lack on adequate conceptual links; lack of focus on the theme of the exam; inability to produce an efficient synthesis/analysis and use of non-pertinent examples; inappropriate language.

Contrastive phonology and morphosyntax (spanish-italian): main phonetic-phonological phenomena of Spanish language, tonic and atonic personal pronouns, functions and uses of articles and demonstrative pronouns, possessives, quantifiers, the preposition a and the accusative, uses of ser and estar, indicative and conditional tenses. *** Inflectional and derivational morphology of Spanish language: fundamentals of morphology (morphemes, allomorphs, affixes, etc.); verbal and nominal inflections; derivation (prefixation and nominal, adjectival and verbal suffixation) and analysis of most productive suffixes of Spanish language; composition and other processes of word formation. *** The didactic seminar [2 hours] on the forms and syntactic implications of inclusive language, held by the Professor, is included in the course contents.

By the end of the course, students will know: 1) Spanish phonology, morphology and morphosyntax; 2) word formation in Spanish and the fundamentals of Spanish inflectional and derivational morphology; 3) the fundamentals of contrastive linguistics (Spanish-Italian). Moreover, they will be able to: 1) recognise standard and diatopic variations in Spanish, also from a contrastive perspective [with Italian]; 2) recognise, also starting from concrete examples, the main Spanish phonological and morphological phenomena; 3) make judgements on grammatical aspects of standard and non-standard Spanish also in comparison with standard and non-standard Italian; 4) precisely convey the main linguistic concepts related to Spanish-Italian contrastive analysis; 5) use profitably textbooks and further material provided in class or uploaded on DIR.
