The course will present and discuss clinical cases encompassing neoplastic and non-neoplastic hematology. It will provide the basis for a critical interpretation of the objective findings of the haematological patient, including the role of physical signs, blood counts and biochemistry, imaging and coagulation testing.

The general objective of the course is to be able to diagnose simple hematological conditions and to identify patients who need to be referred to specialistic work-out with or without urgency. The objective is also to develop a critical approach to clinical management in hematology, as requested by the Dublin descriptor 3.

Notions of biochemistry physiology, pathology and medical semeiotics; knowledge of the contents of the propedeutical courses of the program.

The exam will be in the context of the exam of the Integrated Course of Patologia Medica 3. In particular, the exam of Hematology is based on: Part a) Written exam with 15 MCQs (5 possible choices, of which only 1 is correct) concerning the topics of the course. A fraction of the MCQs will be based on “clinical vignettes”. Examples of the MCQs are available on the UPO DIR website.
Part B: oral discussion of a simulated clinical case related to the program of the course

Clinical cases of anemia, disorders of hemostasis, lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, hairy cell leukemia, acute leukemias.

At the end of the course the students will be able to conduct a basic diagnostic work-up and to identify potentially high risk and life threathening conditions in hematology.
