To train physiotherapists in interprofessional collaboration in the rehabilitative management of communication disorders and swallowing difficulties in adult patients with acquired brain injuries. to develop a common interprofessional language by sharing specific meanings related to the speech and language therapy profession, in order to improve interaction within the multidisciplinary team. to promote the active contribution of physiotherapy practice to the management of swallowing and communication difficulties.

Neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. principles of physiotherapy assessment and treatment of neurological patients.

Lectures.
discussion of short videos of clinical cases.

Sharing and review of selected textual and treatment materials, followed by practical experimentation, discussion, and joint classroom-based reflection.
Student-selected activity: subject to prior approval by the clinical placement tutor, students may have the opportunity to shadow the speech and language therapist during their second-year clinical placement, observing and participating in the management of cases relevant to speech and language therapy within the context of physiotherapy treatment.

Written examination with multiple-choice questions.

Communication, language, and the organs involved in speech production; models for interpreting linguistic and communicative functioning, from sensory processing to output production. Assessment, rehabilitation principles, and strategies for language disorders resulting from acquired brain injuries and neurodegenerative diseases (aphasia, dysarthria, and anarthria).

Disorders affecting gesture production; assessment methods in collaboration with the physiotherapist, formulation of hypotheses, and development of rehabilitation strategies.

Swallowing and dysphagia: definition, assessment methods, signs and indicators to be identified, rehabilitation goals, and the role of posture in promoting functional swallowing.

Interprofessional integration: a collaborative approach to the management of patients with acquired brain injury, with particular focus on breathing, phonation, and swallowing.

Knowledge of the main cognitive and communication disorders in adult patients with neurological conditions and their potential impact on motor treatment; approaches and communication strategies in patient interaction.

Knowledge of the main swallowing disorders and postural facilitation techniques aimed at promoting safe and functional swallowing.
