Reference Texts
The student receives the slides presented in class as well as the attached videos.
It also receives the paper/IT contents of the main international guidelines on the most important topics covered in class and during the exercises
Learning Outcomes
The Medical-Surgical Emergencies course is an exam of the second semester of the last year of the single-cycle Master's Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery.
The program proposes an approach to clinical problems largely known to students, but faced according to a methodology specific to emergency conditions.
This methodology goes beyond the traditional schemes of the nosographic classification of diseases by trying to pass through the criteria of definition of severity and symptomatic approach, postponing the objective of a refined and definitive diagnosis.
This approach takes into account the need to guarantee the student the ability to deal with a clinical condition where the decision of medical behavior must be rapid and aimed at stabilizing and improving the patient's clinical conditions by acting according to largely codified schemes.
Handling emergency situations personally will probably be one of the first tasks in the professional activity of the young doctor; this frequently happens in the absence of specific experience that puts him in a position to be able to face them with confidence and professionalism. The course will also provide students with the basic elements for the health management of major emergencies and disasters.
Prerequisites
Being the last exam of the single-cycle course, it is desirable that the student has acquired the main skills in the clinical care field of both internal medicine and general and specialist surgery
Teaching Methods
The general organization:

Lessons

a- All the lesson topics will be prepared in .ppt and/or text files which will be made available at the end of the lessons

b- The lessons, in frontal teaching in the scheduled hours, will mostly have a problem-based imprint with interactive clinical cases.
The lessons will be held according to the attached programme

The practical exercises

The mandatory practical exercises will include the following topics:

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and approach to polytrauma (4 hours)
Clinical cases in advanced simulation and non technical skills (4 hours)

Simulated clinical cases (4 hours) - Simulated clinical cases (4 hours)
Additional Information
It is also possible for students to participate in a course specifically dedicated to Disaster Medicine where they are trained to develop a specific competence and then participate in an exercise activity as part of a so-called Full scale exercise to acquire the skills "in the field". to respond to a major emergency
In addition, the professional internship requires compulsory attendance at the Emergency Department of the Ospedale Maggiore according to the attached scheme. Attendance at the operating theaters and the intensive care center can instead be agreed on a voluntary basis with Prof. Della Corte.
Assessment Methods
Admission to the exam will be linked to the attendance of the lessons and the attendance of the exercises

The final exam will consist of a preliminary test of 80 quizzes focused on the topics and material presented in the course. The first 40 quizzes will be considered basic for passing the course, the student must answer at least 30 correctly in order to pass the exam.

Expected Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course it is hoped that the student will have acquired the ability to evaluate the signs and symptoms of the main situations that arise in the context of emergency / urgency, that he will be able to direct the diagnosis towards immediate life-saving therapies and will be able to coordinate effectively and efficiency the therapeutic diagnostic process and the coordination of any consultants. It will have to be able to guarantee rapid clinical care management and aim at stabilizing and improving the patient's clinical conditions by acting according to largely codified schemes.
