Course Contents
Basic numerical problems related to topics covered in the General and Inorganic Chemistry module: balanced chemical equations, the solutions and their properties, the chemical equilibrium in solution.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the students will acquire the knowledge necessary to solve simple stoichiometry exercises. In particular, the students will be able to draw conclusions, to choose the most appropriate strategies and apply the knowledge in solving the practical problems that will face in lab classes. They will also have acquired an appropriate chemical lexicon as well as the ability to learn independently new knowledge on stoichiometry problems.
Prerequisites
None.
Teaching Methods
Teaching in lecture halls with traditional lessons and blackboard exercises, with collective discussion.
Additional Information
During the course, the students will be directly involved (individually and collectively) in solving numerical exercises in order to stimulate the preparation and testing on a daily basis the progress made, encouraging also the use of the appropriate chemical lexicon.
Assessment Methods
The exam consists of a 2-hour written exam that evaluates the student's ability to apply the knowledge acquired during the course. This test will consist of 8 numerical exercises covering all the topics of the course. Each exercise will be evaluated max 1.25 points (maximum total: 10 points); the passing grade of the test is minimum 6/10 points and it is the indispensable condition for the participation to the second written part of the exam. The exercises will be chosen so that the entire program is covered (in turn the subjects will be balancing of a chemical equation, stoichiometry, gases, solutions and their properties, chemical equilibria in gaseous phase and in solution, acid-base properties, electrochemistry) and the student can demonstrate knowledge, the ability to apply the basic chemical concepts, an autonomous assessment between different choices, and the use of an appropriate chemical lexicon. The maximum grade is obtained with 8 exercises whereas to pass the exam is required to solve 5 exercises. The difficulty level of the exercises corresponds to the program and the reference texts indicated: on the website D.I.R. of the course the texts and solutions of the written tests given in previous exams are published.
Detailed Syllabus
This module takes place within the General and Inorganic Chemistry course and consists therefore in basic numerical exercises linked to subjects treated during the theoretical course. It will address in particular: the writing and balancing of chemical equations, solutions and their properties, equilibrium problems (acid-base, pH calculation, buffer solutions, hydrolysis, precipitations), electrochemistry.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: theoretical and operational knowledge of general chemistry to solve stoichiometry exercises.

Applying knowledge and understanding: ability to apply the theory to balance a chemical reaction, to perform stoichiometric calculations, to solve numerical problems with gases, solutions, and acid or basic substances, electrochemistry.

Communication skills: to acquire a suitable vocabulary of chemical terms.

Making judgements: to draw conclusions on stoichiometry problems and to choose between different choices.
