Learning Outcomes
Basic knowledge of the birth and development of modern science (16th-18th centuries). Achievement of the following skills: comprehension of early modern scientific texts by teacher guidance; comparison of different historical-scientific models; analysis and synthesis of texts and studies; elaboration of clear and consistent, written and oral presentations. These goals are measurable in relation to acquired full, basic and modest abilities.
Prerequisites
No prerequites. The course offers the students the first occasion to meet the history of science, which is neither taught at school not lectured in other DISUM courses.
Teaching Methods
Lectures; reading and commenting texts; one (compulsory) written proof in itinere (about topics from lectures).
Additional Information
Non-attending students will ask the teacher for supplementary bibliography. They will prepare a paper to be sent to the teacher at least a week before the exam.
Assessment Methods
A compulsory written proof in itinere to verify students' comprehension and mastery of the explained subjects. The proof has no grade. Written exam (with grade) consisting in the elaboration of three basic topics of the course. To obtain the basic, the intermediate and the best evaluation, students have to reach 1, 2, and 3 objectives of the course.
Detailed Syllabus
The course offers outlines of history of modern science (15th-18th centuries) explaining exemplary study cases, reading short texts and discussing various models of scientific historiography.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Basic knowledge of the birth and development of early modern science. Achievement of the following skills: comprehension of early modern scientific texts with teacher guidance; comparison of different historical-scientific models; analysis and synthesis of texts and studies; elaboration of clear and consistent, written and oral presentations. These learning objectives could be obtained in excellent (3 objectives), intermediate (2 objectives), sufficient (1 objective) way.
