English Language Practical Classes Specialistica A (LM 37) is focussed on practical activities (written and oral) in the area of (inter-)disciplinary communication in the Humanities.

The general contents and specific topics, language skills and activities, the end-of-course examination, as well as the assessment criteria applied, refer to an advanced C1/C2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference).

Language skills at an advanced level: min. B2+, but C1 is preferred (CEFR).

Practical activities for decoding (authentic materials/sources), encoding (teamwork and self-study), work on a project, grammatical skills; oral interaction focussed on disciplinary issues in academic settings (Humanities).

Self-study and activities previously introduced during practical classes.

Practical Classes will start in September-October 2023 and will end in June 2024.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PRACTICAL CLASSES SPECIALISTICA A is a TWO-STEP ASSESSMENT-ASSIGNMENT.

1st STEP: self-study and personal/individual research project/in-depth analysis (assignment/task)
2nd STEP: oral presentation of the personal/individual research project/in-depth analysis.

Your practical classes final mark is the average of all your grades: personal/individual research project/in-depth analysis (written version) and oral exam (research project/in-depth analysis presentation and discussion).

To sit the Practical Classes Specialistica A oral presentation, students have to pass the personal/individual research project (to receive a positive mark min. 18/30 in their research project written version).

With reference to the 'Intended learning objectives' (see below), the following grades correspond to different skills: 18-22/30-sufficient, 23-25/30-satisfying, 26-28/30 good, 29-30 lode-very good.

Students are due to sit both their written and their oral exams in the same exam session (appello).

SYLLABUS VALID UNTIL: Winter Exam Session 2025 (January-February)

TWO-STEP ASSESSMENT-ASSIGNMENT:

1) The exam consists of an assignment (personal/individual research project/in-depth analysis) based on methods, criteria, and procedures already discussed and applied during the year: students are required to write a scientific article in the field of humanities based on the previously selected sources and their own research. Different issues and perspectives will be highlighted, analysed, and discussed. Students are required to carry out a preliminary research on a specific topic, read and organise materials, and then write a 1500/1700-word article.
The article will be structured according to precise planning: abstract and introduction, literature review, method/s, results/discussion, bibliography/references.

After this first step, the teacher will review the first draft and suggest changes/improvements if necessary, which the student is expected to carry out.

2) The assignment will be definitely written according to the review, and later presented at the oral exam (oral presentation, explanation, argumentation of the research project/in-depth analysis). The criteria of the oral presentation evaluation will be available on the DIR page of the course.

English Language Practical classes Specialistica A (LM 37) aims at an in-depth analysis of the English Language, to stimulate the user’s awareness in written/oral interaction in the Humanities.
The focus will be placed on specialised lexis, grammar, style, textual organisation, and discourse issues.

In addition, practical sessions will include theoretical elements of the communication theory and its application in the field of academic and professional writing.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Students will be able to organise their research project/in-depth analysis in a specific field of knowledge/on a specific topic, starting from outlines, suggestions, and selected sources.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Students will also be able to select the most appropriate register/style in relation to the topic/s and the target audience.

Linguistic knowledge and language understanding will be used at a practical level, and applied to the many disciplinary research and professional contexts.
