Course Contents
Presentation of the basic concepts of population and sample.
Summary and presentation in tables and graphs of categorical data.
Synthesis and presentation in tables and graphs of numerical data.
Central trend indices: average, median, fashion.
Variability indices: standard deviation, coefficient of variation, range and percentiles.
Sampling (practical approach).
Probability.
Binomial and Gaussian probability distributions.
Properties of the distribution of the sample mean.
Confidence interval of the sample mean.
Hypothesis test.
Z-test and standard normal distribution.
Distribution t.
Comparison between means of two independent samples.
Comparison between means of two paired samples.
Data analysis in contingency tables: chi-squared test.
Data transformation (logarithmic and others).

Learning Outcomes
Acquire skills regarding the description of statistical data:
- understand the basic terminology (population, sample, variable, etc);
- calculation and presentation of frequency distributions;
- description of data with graphic methods;
- calculation of central tendency and variability indices;
- analysis of the relationship between two variables;
- data transformation.

Provide an introduction to statistical inference:
- evaluation of the probability of an event;
- binomial and Gaussian probability distributions;
- properties of the distribution of the sample mean;
- confidence interval and hypothesis test.

Statistical tests:
- student's t test for paired data;
- student's t-test for data in groups;
- chi-square test
-Odds ratio (O.R.).

In summary, we intend to provide the necessary bases for:
reading scientific articles;
the presentation and statistical analysis of simple data series
for continuation of studies.
Prerequisites
The student must have mathematical knowledge corresponding to the program of secondary schools of the second degree.
Teaching Methods
Presentations in MS-WORD and MS-Powerpoint, PDF format.
During the supplementary teaching activity, a short set of solved exercises is made available, which are discussed in the classroom.
Assessment Methods
Written exam, common to the three subjects of the integrated course (Medical Statistics, Physics, Computer Science). The exam involves a combination of multiple choice questions, open questions and calculation exercises.
