At the first level, the course aims to:
- acquisition of a good knowledge of the cultural and political context in which our judgment on ancient environment was formed;
- deepening of the knowledge of the Latin language in its morphological and syntactic structures from a historical perspective;
- acquisition of the ability to deconstruct preconceived judgments;
- knowledge of teaching methods for transmitting this knowledge in upper secondary education.

At an advanced level, the course aims to:
- acquisition of an in-depth knowledge of the cultural and political context in which our judgment on ancient environment was formed;
- achievement of a solid knowledge of the Latin language in its morphological and syntactic structures from a historical perspective;
- acquisition of the advanced ability to deconstruct preconceived judgements;
- in-depth knowledge of teaching methods for transmitting this knowledge in upper secondary education.

Destination: students from high schools where Latin is studied for FIVE years. In class, we will try to review grammar, but those who feel the need for a more substantial review can follow the practice exercise related to the course "Cultura Latina" (prof. N. Rosso)

Frontal lessons; exercises; Online teaching (DIR), support workshops, hours of tutoring, simulation of the written test. Students interested in the course should register as soon as possible on the course page on DIR, where they will be able to find material and detailed information.

The objectives and contents of the course consider the provisions of Ministerial Decree 616/2017.

The exam includes a written test (45% of the exam mark) and an oral one (55% of the exam mark). Passing the written test is a necessary condition to access the oral. The written test consists of a dictionary translation of a Latin text not covered in class but of the same style, genre and historical period. To achieve sufficiency in the written test (18/30) the student must have carried out a written examination demonstrating at least a basic knowledge of morphology and syntax.
The oral test will consist of the translation and grammatical-syntactic analysis of one of the passages read and translated in class (60% of the weight of the oral examination), which will then have to be framed within the topics illustrated in class (40% of the importance of the oral exam). To pass the exam, it will be necessary to answer at least sufficiently each question.

In the case of particularly brilliant exams, honors will be assigned according to the following criteria: (i) grade of the written exam equal to or higher than 27/30; (ii) ability to move critically within the historical-political panorama studied and with particular linguistic properties.

To achieve the knowledge, skills and abilities corresponding to the basic level, the student must demonstrate the following:
- (knowledge and understanding): a fundamental knowledge of the environmental literature and the main morpho-syntactic structures of the Latin language
- (ability to apply knowledge and understanding): knowing how to translate a Latin text in a sufficient way and contextualize it within the socio-political context of the end of the republic
- (autonomy of judgment): Acquisition of the ability to express judgments on texts and their critical interpretations, critically discussing their reasons and limits, with particular attention to the historical-political perspective.
- (communication skills): Ability to present the concepts and data learned in an orderly and straightforward way, using appropriate language, avoiding mnemonic repetition and moving independently among the topics covered, also in the perspective of effective communication from a didactic point of view
- (learning ability): Know how to use the methodological tools provided in class (for attending students) and make use of the handouts present in the DIR and of the essays provided in the exam bibliography (for all) to identify the fundamental thematic nuclei.

The advanced level is achieved upon meeting the following requirements:
- (knowledge and understanding): advanced knowledge of the environmental literature and the main morpho-syntactic structures of the Latin language
- (ability to apply knowledge and understanding): knowing how to translate a Latin prose text in a timely, correct and personal way and contextualize it within the socio-political context of the end of the republic
- (autonomy of judgment): acquisition of a mature ability to express broad and articulated judgments on texts and their critical interpretations, critically discussing their reasons and limits, with particular attention to the historical-political perspective.
- (communication skills): Ability to explain the concepts and data learned in a brilliant, very orderly and straightforward way, using appropriate language, avoiding mnemonic repetition and moving independently among the topics covered, also in the perspective of effective communication from an educational point of view
- (learning ability): knowing how to master the methodological tools provided in class (for attending students) and make use of the handouts present in the DIR and of the essays provided in the exam bibliography (for all) to identify the fundamental thematic nuclei and the various reciprocal links.

These learning outcomes are consistent with the provisions of the SUA of the Study Programme, framework A4.b2 - literary and linguistic area.
