Course Contents
1) Cell lines, primary cells, mesenchymal stem cells (isolation, culture, differentiation and characterization techniques)
2) Monolayer and 3D culture techniques
3) Guided regeneration: scaffolds, growth factors, active molecules, hints of gene therapy
4) Techniques for studying tissue regeneration (macroscopic, mechanical, microscopic, biochemical, molecular)
5) Experimental examples

Learning Outcomes
Instruct students on concepts such as tissue engineering and tissue regeneration as new therapeutic approaches to help healing and regeneration of damaged biological tissues or to replace them in the case of extensive damage. In addition to theoretical and scientific concepts will be given to students indication about how in vitro is possible to study a new idea together with why is important literature critical analysis. Information will be provided on in vitro study techniques for the development of new devices and for the study of the existing ones
Prerequisites
Knowledge acquired passing biology, anatomy, physiology, pathology and biochemistry tests
Teaching Methods
Lectures with support of videos and microscope connected to video projection.
Based on Lab availability and on student demand will be possible to attend 4 hours of cell culture Lab

Oral presentation of a scientific paper and ability to answer to technical and scientific questions related to the presentation
Detailed Syllabus
1) Line cells: what are they? How to grow, freeze and thaw. Primary cultures: culture insulation techniques and characterization. Mesenchymal stem cells: insulation techniques, tissues from which to isolate them, culture techniques, differentiation and characterization.
2) Cell culture techniques in monolayer and 3D on scaffolds; how cellular behaviours is modified and which different analysis techniques has to be used(stereomicroscopy, SEM confocal optical fluorescence microscopy; biochemical and molecular techniques, citotoxicity, cell migration, adhesion and proliferation on scaffolds)
3) Guided regeneration: scaffolds, growth factors, active molecules, hints of gene therapy
4) Techniques for studying tissue regeneration (macroscopic, mechanical, microscopic, biochemical, molecular)
5) Experimental examples: seminars on laboratory experiences in bone and cartilage regeneration
Expected Learning Outcomes
Basics of tissue engineering and tissue regeneration such as therapeutic approaches for healing, regeneration and replacement of damaged biological tissues. Information on in vitro study techniques and the ability to choose the most suitable techniques for the study of a new preparation. Critical analysis of literature from both a theoretical and technical point of view. Thanks to design ideas proposed during the seminars and followed in their development until the clinical study, the student should have learned curiosity and interest in the proposed scientific field with the ability to discuss with the classroom and the teacher about limits and strengths of scientific papers examined.
