KNOWLEDGES Learn an introductory overview of forms and styles in the history of American and English literature through the reading and analysis of 19th and 20th century literary texts. Acquire the appropriate basic tools for the analysis of different literary genres, and regarding narrative, in particular the difference between author and narrator in order to discuss narrative and ideological strategies. At a first level, the student should demonstrate knowledge of the literary-historical lineaments developed in the two modules and the technical basics for text analysis. At a more advanced level (excellence band above 28/30) the student should demonstrate excellent knowledge of both aspects without significant margins of error. SKILLS At a first level, to be able to analyze and summarize the texts with particular attention to their linguistic dimension, narrative strategies, thematic focus and context. At a more advanced level, being able to suggest interpretations on the basis of the data collected in the texts. The requirement for passing the exam is to achieve the first level of both knowledge and skills in the tests for both modules. The requirement for achieving the excellence range (above 28/30) is to achieve the advanced level of both knowledge and skills in the tests for both modules. The overall grade will reflect the average of the assessments for both modules, for both knowledge and skills. Please note that the assessment takes into account both the form and content of the written tests, which can be completed in either Italian or English, as desired. TRANSVERSAL SKILLS Ability to write short texts written in a clear, correct and focused way in response to questions on the texts covered by the module.

English level B1-B2 in order to read English literary texts. Sufficient level of writing in Italian or English with correct use of grammar: punctuation, syntax, paragraph structure, spelling, linguistic register (for the drafting of the written tests).

Lectures; classroom discussion and analysis of the texts anayzed in the module.

Three written tests, one on English literature (divided into two parts); two on American literature (a mid-term one on the History of Literature textbook; one on analysis and commentary on the texts in the syllabus). - Introduction to the Anglo-American historical and literary context of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a focus on differences in race, class, gender and sexuality. - Terms and methodology for reading literary texts. - Reading of one or two texts (extracts) per week chosen by the teacher and uploaded on DIR. INTEGRATION OF THE GENDER DIMENSION: The gender dimension is the focus of one of the two modules, but will also be covered extensively in the second.

KNOWLEDGES To be informed about the main issues around the themes and forms of the history of American and English literature, focused on a representative sample of literary texts. To acquire the basic terms of literary analysis applied to different literary genres, and regarding narrative, in particular the different between author and narrator, in order to be able to discuss the narrative and ideological strategies of the texts. At a basic level, students must demonstrate knowledge of the historical and literary features covered in the two modules and the basic technical concepts for text analysis. At a more advanced level (grade range above 28/30), students must demonstrate excellent knowledge of both aspects without significant margins of error. SKILLS At a basic level, the ability to analyse and summarise the texts in the programme, with particular attention to their linguistic dimension, narrative strategies, thematic focus and the relationship between text and context. At a further level, propose independent interpretations based on the data collected in the text. The requirement for achieving a pass mark for the integrated module is to reach the first level of both knowledge and skills in the tests for both modules. The requirement for achieving the excellence band (above 28/30) is to reach the advanced level of both knowledge and skills in the tests for both modules. The overall grade will reflect the average of the assessments for both modules, for both knowledge and skills. It should be noted that the assessment takes into account both the form and content of the written tests, which can be completed in either Italian or English, as desired. TRANSVERSAL SKILLS Ability to write short texts clearly, correctly and concisely in response to questions about the texts covered in the module.
