English Language Practical Classes 3 aim to develop lexical, grammatical, morpho-syntactic, and discursive skills (both encoding and decoding) of contemporary English, in relation to everyday topics and events.

The general contents and specific topics, language skills and activities, the end-of-course examination, as well as the assessment criteria applied, refer to an advanced (B2+) C1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference).

English Language 2 (English Language Practical Classes 2 + English Linguistics A)

Translation activities from English/Italian into Italian/English of short paragraphs (this to develop grammatical and interlinguistic skills), essay writing, oral interaction focussed on general and/or specific topics of everyday communication (ex. current events), or disciplinary/academic fields.

Self-study and activities previously introduced during practical classes.

ALL THE STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE A COPY OF THE COMPULSORY TEXTS (see above). Practical Classes will start in October 2025 and will end in June 2026. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PRACTICAL CLASSES III YEAR Written exam (3 hrs) Your practical classes final mark is the average of all your grades: different sections of the written exam. 3rd-year students have to pass their lexis and grammar exercises, the translation activity and the essay writing (min. 18/30 for all of them). With reference to the 'Intended learning objectives' (see below), the following grades correspond to different skills: 18-22/30-sufficient, 23-25/30-satisfying, 26-28/30 good, 29-30 lode-very good. Oral interaction skills, language competence, and fluency (discourse structure, pronunciation, lexis, morphosyntax, and linguistic appropriateness) will be assessed by professor E. Lonati on the occasion of the English Linguistics B exam. WRITTEN EXAM: 1) ACADEMIC ENGLISH. Lexical test on academic/disciplinary words and expressions, terminology examined in class and as part of individual study. Additionally, grammar aspects reviewed in class are included. Time: 15’ minutes. 2) TRANSLATION. This includes the translation of a medium-length text from Italian into English. The use of a monolingual English-English dictionary is allowed. Time: 75 minutes. 3) DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY WRITING (describe, expose, explain, exemplify) of 550-600 words, in order to assess grammar, lexis, spelling, punctuation, textual cohesion and coherence, logical structure, and clarity/perspicuity. The use of a monolingual English-English dictionary is allowed. Time: 90 minutes. Oral interaction skills, language competence, and fluency (discourse structure, pronunciation, lexis, morphosyntax, and linguistic appropriateness) will be assessed by professor E. Lonati on the occasion of the English Linguistics B exam.

English Language Practical Classes 3 are based on the textbooks listed above, and on further materials analysed during the year (see DIR).

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Students will be able to read and understand complex texts of contemporary English at an advanced level, both of general contents, and/or of academic/disciplinary contents.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
They will also be able to translate texts and write essays of medium length and complexity on general/disciplinary topics, and to have a conversation in the same general/disciplinary fields.

Linguistic knowledge and language understanding will be used at a practical level, and applied to the many disciplinary research and professional contexts.
