German-Italian/Italian-German translation: theoretical approaches and translation strategies.

At the end of the course students are able to analyze different problems concerning the translation from German to Italian and viceversa could have. Students are also able to identify and use different translation methods and strategies for the languages German-Italian, as well as to analyze different typologies of translation (translation of different textual genres). The course pays special attention to translation by artificial intelligence-based tools.
Students could use the competences given by the course in their future translation activities and works.

In order to attend the course students must have passed the integrated exam Lingua tedesca III or must have reach the level B2 (German language).

Explanation of different topics through frontal lessons. Then seminar lessons or "flipped classes", in which students have to take active part in the lessons by doing exercises and presenting the results of their personal researches about the topic of the course.

Written exam divided into two main parts: open questions (5-7 questions) and analysis of a translation (with the original text). The skills in applying knowledge are tested through the analysis of the given translation. Students should be able to identify and describe the translation practices and strategies used in the text. The skills in expressing judges are tested through the analysis of the given translation and through the open questions. Students should observe, comment and express judges about different kinds of translations and texts. The communicative skills are tested through the answers to the open questions. Students should use the proper scientific terminology in describing the different phenomena and in examining the translation. The skills in studying are tested through the open questions as well as the analysis of the given translation. Students should demonstrate to be able to use the concepts and the suggested bibliography in a proper way.

The course consists of two different parts: a theorical introduction and a more pratical part about problem and translation methods for the languages German-Italian. Authentical texts belonging to different textual genres will be analysed, in order to point out different aspects about translating work, such as linguistic interference and the translation of the so-called Kulturspezifika (for instance several words from the DDR-period).
