Histological knowledge of the morphological characteristics of preparations derived from human and murine tissues – Ability to recognize and describe human cells and tissues – Students will acquire independent judgment, communication skills, and the ability to learn histology.

Basic knowledge of cytology and biology

An introductory lecture explaining how to examine histological sections under the microscope (using a PowerPoint presentation), followed by five laboratory sessions involving direct observation of histological sections using light microscopes. For the laboratory sessions, students will be divided into groups to ensure each student has the opportunity for hands-on observation. Each laboratory session is led by an instructor and a tutor.

An initial written exam with multiple-choice questions to be completed on a computer (in common with the Human Histology and Embryology course). Once a student passes the written exam, there will be given an oral exam involving observation of a histological preparation under a light microscope. Students must be able to recognize and describe the histological preparation.

Knowledge of the main histological staining techniques. Theoretical knowledge acquired concurrently in the Human Histology and Embryology course: - Epithelial tissues of respiratory, gastrintestinal and urinary system. Cytoplasmic and surface specializations related to protective, mechanical, barrier, and transport functions. Classification and structure. Tegumentary system - Exocrine glandular epithelia. Specializations of secretory functions. Histology of salivary glands, Brunner's glands, and the exocrine pancreas - Endocrine glandular epithelia. Histology of pancreatic islets, the thyroid gland, and the adrenal gland. Blood, bone marrow; histology of the thymus, spleen, and bone tissue. Tongue - Muscle tissue: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac. Nervous tissue: cerebrum, cerebellum, and ganglia. Histology of the ovary, testes and epididimus.

Ability to use the optical microscope; - ability to recognize and describe histological sections of normal tissues constituting the human organism; - ability to understand the basic tools for cellular and tissue investigation and the methods for their study
