The course aims to provide the student with general and targeted notions on the main cardiological, neurological and acute circulatory insufficiency (shock) emergencies, which characterize the first aid activity, with particular attention to the role of the nurse of critical and emergency care. The student will be provided with clinical-operational information to be able to integrate the team that takes care of the patient with these pathologies.

The main training objective is the knowledge of the main cardiological and neurological syndromes and cardiovascular failure, with mastery of the role of the critical care nurse in the management of these clinical pictures. Particular attention will be placed on knowledge of management priorities, integrated into teamwork such as that of the emergency team.

Students are expected to possess basic knowledge of the pathophysiology and semiotics of the main time-dependent conditions in cardiology, pulmonology, and neurology. Basic knowledge of physiopathology and clinical aspects of shock and acid-base balance are also required as well as electrocardiography and management and organizational aspects related to emergency care settings.

Lectures. All the teaching material of the course, supplementary and in-depth material will be found on the appropriate space of the University Moodle platform (Ditattica in Rete - DIR).

In the case of students with specific learning disabilities (DSA), the Teacher will be available, in synergy with the DSA Help Desk Service, to meet the specific needs that will be presented, with the aim of maintaining maximum autonomy of the person, enhancing personal skills. To start this process, it will be sufficient to send an email to the Course Coordinator (luigi.castello@med.uniupo.it). The methods of learning assessment will also be adapted to specific needs, as provided for by the University system.

Written exam with multiple choice questions to be performed via computer interface using the DIR platform. The exam is always performed as a single quiz, including questions relating to the other modules of the Integrated Course.

The patient with chest pain:
- Heart disease
- Aortic disease
- Notes on: Pulmonary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal diseases

Neurological emergencies:
- Strokes
- Epilepsy

Acute circulatory failure:
- Hypovolemic and hemorrhagic shock
- Cardiogenic shock
- Septic shock

Advanced circulatory life support (ACLS):
- Review of the main arrest and peri-arrest algorithms

It is expected that students, at the end of the course:
1) know the emergency-urgency working method and the consequent organization of the emergency-urgency network, both extra- and intrahospital;
2) are aware of the determining role of time, as a limited resource in emergency-urgency contexts and as a dominant prognostic factor in many acute conditions (time-dependent pathologies);
3) know the priorities of the critically ill patient based on the presenting syndromes, with particular attention to the role of the critical care nurse within the emergency work team.
