Knowledge of oral surgery concepts is essential for the training of dental hygienists. The course aims to provide skills and competences: in recognizing the main oral pathologies requiring surgical intervention; in managing emergencies in the event of dentoalveolar trauma; in assisting and supporting dentists in surgical activities, from preparing the operating field to caring for and managing surgical patients; and in the appropriate behaviors to be followed in emergency situations that may arise during dental and other surgical procedures.

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of: - the semiology of the main pathologies treated in oral surgery; - the therapeutic needs and the activity of dentists in order to be able to prepare patients and assist in the preparation of the operating environment, arranging surgical instruments, assisting in oral surgery procedures, and managing emergencies resulting from surgery.

the student must possess the knowledge deriving from the preparatory teachings of anatomy, histology, pharmacology, radiology, oral pathology, clinical odontostomatology and have acquired the skills gained from the internship.

The Course makes use of theoretical lectures implemented by integrative teaching lessons given to small groups with the exposure of clinical cases of the topics covered during the course. During the internship, students must also attend outpatient clinics where surgical activities are performed.

The topics covered by the program of the Oral Surgery Course are illustrated ranging from the fundamental notions of surgical procedures to the operational implications directed to the various types of patients afferent to dental clinics.

The assessment consists of a test with 11 open-ended questions. Answers are graded from 3 to 0 points, with the possibility of adding decimal points for particularly comprehensive answers. Alternatively, questions can be administered orally. The exam is designed to assess the level of knowledge acquired and understanding of the course content. Written assignments, upon request, are graded and discussed with each student individually.

Preparation of the operating environment, the operating field, the student and the operators (exposure control, hand washing, PPE)
Outline of anatomy of the oral cavity (cranial nerves and vessels of odontostomatological interest), of the teeth and of the periodontium.
Odontostomatological semeiotics (tools and methods): anamnestic collection and objective examination of the cephalic area and oral cavity:
Signs and symptoms most commonly found in the pathology of the mouth, attached organs and jaw bones:
Odontostomatological anesthesiology: materials and methods.
Exodontics: materials (surgical instruments: nomenclature and recognition) and methods (techniques). Simple, complex dental avulsions of impacted teeth, germectomies: local and systemic indications, accidents and complications.
Apicoectomy: indications, techniques, failures, retrograde obturation
Soft tissue surgery. Excisional and incisional biopsies: indications.
Frenulum and bridle surgery (outline).
Preprosthetic surgery in the edentulous patient (outline).
Dental trauma. Classifications, etiopathogenesis, symptoms, diagnosis, hints of therapy.
Post traumatic dental implants.
Tooth-facial trauma as signs of child maltreatment and abuse.
Complications and emergencies in oral surgery.
Management of the systemic and difficult-to-heal patient.
Containment protocols in the dental field of infection.

The course aims to provide the students with specific theoretical knowledge related to oral surgery so that they can acquire the competence to apply them in clinical practice. The student must acquire the ability to operate independently, as regards his role, both in routine and emergency situations.
