General Virology: Structure of Viruses; Virus classification; Viral infection of the cell; Viral replication mechanisms; Pathogenesis of viral infections; Pathologies caused by viruses; Viral persistence and oncogenicity; Anti-viral immunity; Anti-viral vaccinations.

Special Virology: Herpesviruses and diagnostics of herpetic viral infections (HSV, VZV, EBV, CMV, HHV6); Papillomavirus and HPV Viral Infection Diagnosis; Other DNA viruses (Poxvirus, Adenovirus, Polyomavirus, Parvovirus); Enterovirus and diagnosis of Polio, Coxsackie, Echo virus infections; Togavirus and rubella virus infection diagnostics; Paramyxovirus and diagnostics of measles virus infections, mumps, RSV; Orthomyxovirus and diagnosis of influenza virus infections; Rotavirus and diagnostics of viral gastroenteritis; Retrovirus and diagnosis of HIV and HTLV infections; Arbovirus and arboviral diseases; Other RNA viruses (Calicivirus, Reovirus, Flavivirus, Rhabdovirus, Bunyavirus, Arenavirus, Filovirus, Astrovirus, Coronavirus); Hepatitis virus (HAV, HBV, HCV, delta hepatitis, HEV) and diagnostics of viral hepatitis; notes on viroids and prions.

Virological diagnostics: Handling of samples; Indirect diagnostics; anti-viral antibody testing; Serological diagnostics of viral infections; Direct diagnostic methods; Tests for viral antigens; Viral isolation and cell cultures; Electron microscopy; Rapid diagnosis of viral infections; Molecular methods for research and quantification of the viral genome; Determination of the genotypic characteristics of viruses; Determination of resistance to antiviral drugs.
Viral diagnostics in the transplant patient, in pregnant women, in patients with neurological diseases, in respiratory diseases, in gastrointestinal diseases, in patients with hepatitis, in pathologies with maternal-fetal transmission, in sexually transmitted diseases, in exanthematous diseases.

Learning Outcomes
The aim of the module is to deepen the knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of the viruses most frequently implicated in infections and responsible for human pathologies, so that the student may be able to apply the knowledge and understanding to face the the most correct diagnostic procedure to identify a virus responsible for infection.
Objectives are also to form in the student an autonomy of judgment, to develop communication skills and learning ability.
Prerequisites
The student must have the basic knowledge of general virology.

Assessment Methods
At the end of the course, students will have to take a written test and an oral test on the topics covered during the lessons. The learning test takes place simultaneously with the other teachers of the integrated course
