To know the main pathologies that affect the locomotor system and the corresponding diagnostic-therapeutical algorythm.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Hystology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology and Radiology.

Frontal lessons with slide presentation.
Additional Information
The course is associated to a clinical ward internship.
Assessment Methods
Learning is assessed by ORAL EXAMINATION. Each candidate will be asked several questions that may relate to all the topics included in the didactic program with prevailing attention to the topics dealt with during the lectures. A grade out of thirty will be proposed which will result in the overall grade out of thirty, expression of a weighted average with a final evaluation shared by the teachers of the individual modules. The exam is passed when the final grade is 18 or higher. The assignment of the highest marks with honors (30 with honors) is envisaged.
Detailed Syllabus
Elements of bone histo-physiology and osteogenesis. Congenital malformations and diseases (CHD, clubfoot, congenital torticollis). Developmental disorders (scoliosis, osteochondrosis, slipped capital femoral epiphysis). Infectious disease of bone and joints. Primitive and secondary tumors of the skeleton. Bone diseases (osteoporosis, rickets and osteomalacia, Paget). Joint diseases (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis). Avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Herniated cervical and lumbar disc. Myotendinous pathologies (shoulder, overload tendinopathies, Achilles tendon). Arguments of hand surgery (upper limb canalicular syndromes, Dupuytren, Volkmann). Biomaterials in orthopedics and traumatology.
General principles of skeletal trauma: basic knowledge on fractures (classification, bone repair processes, principles of treatment, complications), growth plate fractures, the polytrauma patient. Fractures: humerus, wrist, pelvis, hip, leg, vertebrae. Stress fractures. Traumatic injuries of the joints (shoulder, knee, ankle).
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge of the main diseases of the locomotor system, ability in performing a clinical examination in order to put forward a diagnostic hypothesis and prescribe adequate instrumental examinations.
Ability in evaluating severity, management and prognosis of traumatic injuries of the locomotor system.
