The course presents the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in human disease, with a focus on nutrition, lipid and glucose metabolism.
Reference Texts
Pontieri. Patologia Generale e Fisiopatologia. Piccin.
Learning Outcomes
The course will provide the competence to evaluate the consequences of the alteration of the homeostatic mechanisms and their role in disease, with a focus on nutrition, and abnormalities of lipid and glucose metabolism.
Prerequisites
The student must have acquired adequate information of Biology, Anatomy, Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Medical Genetics, Histology and Physiology.
Teaching Methods
Interactive class, discussion, reading of scientific papers.
Assessment Methods
Oral exam. The student need to have acquired information on the most important pathophysiological processes that cause disease.
Detailed Syllabus
Physiopathology of lipid metabolism: The mechanism of lipid transport. Lipoprotein alterations.
Atherosclerotic disease. Mechanism of atherosclerotic plaque formation and evolution.
Physiopathology of nutrition: Protein-calories malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies. Obesity.
Physiopathology of glucose metabolism: mechanisms of insulin resistance. Diabetes
