The internship provides bedside teaching aimed at acquiring the ability to correctly collect the medical history and perform the physical examination.

Apply communication skills with the patient, learning to establish a correct relationship with patient and family. Perform a general as well as a focused physical examination. Carry out a critical reasoning regarding diagnostic tests, and analyze them with a rigorous methodology. Learn to use correct criteria of professional ethics and team work.

Knowledge of normal human anatomy, physics, human physiology and biochemistry, as per the curriculum of the previous years in the medical school. Knowledge and understanding of the preparatory elements of the course of Clinical reasoning, History taking and Physical examination.

The internship is carried out with the support of tutors who guide the student in the knowledge of the diagnostic procedures necessary for the management of the patient, both in an outpatient setting and in the hospital ward.

Clinical rotations take place in the morning (usually but not exclusively) of working days, according to the calendar made public by the offices.

Verification of clinical skills through direct observation by the tutor with attention to the correct execution of history taking and physical examination, and through guided discussion of clinical cases observed in the ward and in the clinic.

During each clinical rotation, with regard to patient care the student will:
a) learn how to obtain an accurate, pertinent history from all appropriate available sources and record it in a complete, though concise manner.
b) learn how to perform and record a thorough physical examination, and review the physical findings with the tutor.
c) learn to develop a prioritized problem list for each patient.
d) learn to develop skills in oral case presentation, including appropriate use of the SBAR bundle.
e) learn to apply good communication skills when dealing with patients and their families.
f) demonstrate respect when communicating with all members of the health care team.

With regard to Professionalism the student will:
a) develop an understanding of the psychosocial, educational, economic and religious backgrounds of patients that underlie their diverse belief systems, and demonstrate this
understanding in the approach to the management of individual patients.
b) Develop a professional relationship with patients, peers and other health care professionals while conducting themselves professionally at all times.
c) demonstrate respect, compassion, integrity, and honesty at all times.

Development of good communication skills and good bed manners.
Development of ability to obtain relevant and accurate clinical information, preparatory to problem solving.
Development, within the limits of one's own experience, of independent judgment regarding the most common clinical presentations, while refining one's ability to interact with the patient and family;
Improvement of one's ability to self-learn the subject matter, including using point-of-care resources made available by the University.
