Course Contents
The course must provide the student with the ability to transform knowledge (theoretical knowledge) into knowing how to do (competence and skills).
At the end of the course the student must be able to apply to professional practice the knowledge acquired relating to the materials to carry out the survey and manual and mechanical professional oral hygiene, transforming them into skills in carrying out the survey and filling in the folder with correct methodology periodontal clinic; in carrying out manual and mechanical professional dental hygiene in all sextants of the teeth; In addition, he must know how to maintain and sharpen the instruments he uses on a daily basis.

Learning Outcomes
The course aims to provide the student with the necessary elements to transform the knowledge of the notions learned into competence and ability in carrying out the periodontal survey, collect and organize the data obtained in the periodontal file, know when and how to perform the ablation of tartar manual and mechanical main foundation of non-surgical periodontal therapy, knowing the methodology and instruments to perform root planing as well as the correct maintenance to preserve its efficiency.
Prerequisites
the student must possess the knowledge, and have the skills, that derive from the other teachings of the Integrated Course of Dental Hygiene Sciences 2 and from the C.I. of the first year of the course.
Teaching Methods
Theoretical lectures, supplementary teaching lessons in small groups, practical exercises during the internship activities in the laboratories of the dental clinic.
Additional Information
ADO and UAF organized for in-depth analysis of single topics.
Assessment Methods
Verification of learning is done daily during the internship.
The exam consists of a written or oral test with open questions or the administration of a quiz.
In the test, the level of knowledge acquired and the understanding of the course contents are verified.
The written assignments are corrected in a collegial form and discussed with each individual student. During the interview, the student must demonstrate that he / she knows and is able to present the arguments in an understandable way; to have understood at least the fundamental concepts. The student must be able to establish connections between topics covered and other disciplines.
In the event of a negative result, it must recognize the mistakes made and then identify the correct answers.
Detailed Syllabus
Periodontal probing: materials and methods.
PD probing depth, clinical attachment level CAL, etc.
Periodontal folder. Importance, significance, timing of the recording of dental-periodontal health data
Manual or computerized methods of compilation.
Non-surgical periodontal therapy
Manual and mechanical ablation of tartar: objectives, indications, contraindications, materials and methods. Systematics for sextants
Root planing: objectives, indications, contraindications, materials and methods. Systematics for sextants.
Manual instruments: grip, insertion, adaptation, angle, activation. General characteristics (handle, stem, working part) and details (Scalers, universal curettes and specific site.
Maintenance of manual instruments: general principles, objectives, advantages and disadvantages of the operator / patient of the use of suitable instruments.
Sharpening tools: materials and methods for sharpening manual tools.
Expected Learning Outcomes
The course aims to allow the student to transform knowledge into professional competence and ability that allow him to carry out the clinical-practical professional activity appropriate to his knowledge.
