Course Contents
Study of the alterations of homeostasis and of the pathological mechanisms underlying diseases.
Reference Texts
Power point slides
Pontieri. Elementi di fisiopatologia generale. Piccin
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the main pathologies. Understanding the concepts of: physiological equilibrium, alteration of physiological equilibrium, compensation mechanisms, and organ failure. Applying these concepts to the various systems of the human body. Use of the appropriate scientific terms
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of human anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and pathology.
Teaching Methods
Power point slides. Discussion and quizzes to verify understanding
Assessment Methods
Written exam based on the knowledge of what has been presented and discussed during the course and on the ability to exemplify the mechanisms underlying diseases. The text will include 8 questions; each correct answer will be graded 3-4, up to a total score of 30. Partially correct answers will also be graded. Questions will ask to define/ describe/ compare one or more physiopathological processes/ mechanisms and their consequences on the organism.
Detailed Syllabus
Hemostasis. Inflammation. Physiopathology of thermoregulation. Physiopathology of hydroelectrolyte balance. Physiopathology of the acid-base balance. Pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system. Atherosclerosis. Physiopathology of the liver. Physiopathology of the kidney.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the main pathologies. Understanding the concepts of: physiological equilibrium, alteration of physiological equilibrium, compensation mechanisms, and organ failure. Applying these concepts to the various systems of the human body. Use of the appropriate scientific terms
