The Integrated Course (IC) consists of modules: (1) Environmental and Workplace Hygiene; (2) Occupational Medicine; (3) Environmental Analysis.

Learning Outcomes
1) ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKPLACE HYGIENE
To provide the basic elements for the knowledge and understanding of environmental / health relationships to prevent exposures to environmental hazards of chemical type. To provide knowledge in order to gain the ability to organize in the field of community procedural identification process, estimation, assessment and risk management. Being able to differentiate on the basis of objective knowledge overall environmental risk and in which requirements must respond to define the environmental health risk.
2) OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE
The module aims to allow the learning of the general principles of occupational medicine relating to the main risk factors in the onset of occupational diseases, including prevention and protection measures. Furthermore, the specific risk factors relating to the job of laboratory technician are investigated with the related prevention and protection measures.
(3) ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS
The module aims to allow the learning of the general principles of Industrial Hygiene, and of the legislative rules that govern it;

The following conditions are also analysed:
- representativeness of environmental sampling;
- analysis of their chemical-physical and toxicological characteristics.

Main groups of pollutants in the working environment:

Chemical Agents: dusts, aerosols, gases, vapors and fibers.

Classification detection limit determination.

Concentration in the environment and good operating practice for:

Physical agents: noise, vibrations and asbestos
basic notion, sources, effects on humans, measuring instruments, dose-response relationship.
Biological agents: Classification, recognition of the risks present in production activity

potential exposure and intended use. Indoor air quality. Sick Building Syndrome

Special Hazardous Waste: E.C.R. Code 18.01.03* - 18.01.06* and 18.01.08*
- sampling and characterization;
- correct management;
- differentiated collection and waste assimilated to urban waste;
- methods of collection, packaging.
Prerequisites
Environmental and Workplace Hygiene: Introductory knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, toxicology and epidemiology.
Occupational Medicine: The student must have the essential knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Physics and Chemistry.
Environmental Analysis: The student must have the necessary knowledge of: Mathematics; Statistics; Physical Geometry; Chemistry; Anatomy; Physiology; Microbiology; Occupational Medicine.
Teaching Methods
The three IC modules adopt the following common teaching methods: Interactive Lectures with Presentations in MS-Power Point format. Use of e-learning platform and educational Internet sites
Moreover, the module of Occupational medicine includes also exercises on the use of the safety data sheet and chemical risk assessment and the module of Environmental Analysis includes practical exercises with instrumentation

Specific exercises are planned on the topics covered in each of the modules.

Assessment Methods
The three IC teachings adopt the modality of the written exam test. The test is based on closed questions, open questions, calculation exercises and interpretation of the results. The final grade is determined taking into account the achievement of the expected learning results of all the modules of the integrated course.
Detailed Syllabus
1) ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKPLACE HYGIENE
Public Health for the health of the population.
Environment and development.
The environmental hygiene principles.
Environmental dynamics.
the quality of the environment protection policies.
The environment-health model DPSIR: determinants, pressures, responses, impacts, status.
Process for the determination of a standard human and / or environmental.
The Ulm model as a valuation approach of chemical risk in the community and targeted specific reference to the four steps of interventions (identification, assessment, evaluation and management).
Calculation procedures for estimating exposure levels such NOEL and ADI, food and drinking water.

2) OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE
Study of the relationship between work and occupational health-diseases, work-related diseases and accidents. Occupational disease: disease models and risk factors in their determinism
Strategies in the prevention of occupational diseases - outline of legislation, prevention tools and figures, supervisory bodies
Monitoring of worker exposure - environmental and biological monitoring
Risk factors relating to the job of laboratory technician-risk assessment and hints of prevention: chemical and carcinogenic risk with hints of toxicology relating to the main chemical substances, biological risk, manual handling of loads, use of equipment equipped with video terminals, related risks to work organization: bullying, burn-out and shift work
Pathologies resulting from exposure to noise
Collective and individual protective devices

(3) ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS
Presentation of the course and the teacher
1) Introduction to Industrial / Environmental Hygiene; the reasons for the environmental investigations; National and Community legislative references.
2) Sampling (first part); professionalism and skills; description of the equipment.
3) Sampling (Second Part); the use of tools for sampling and analysis, representativeness of the sample.
4) Chemical risk: control and instrumental verification of exposure to formaldehyde in the Laboratory of Pathological Anatomy.
5) Reference standards for chemical and physical pollutants; Statistical data analysis: UNI 689 OTL-TEST standard; definition of exposed and homogeneous exposure group (S.G.E.)
6) Hospital Waste: Special Hazardous (C.E.R. 18.01.03* and 18.01.06*) sampling and analysis methods; UNI 10802:2013 standard
7) Practical use of sampling equipment:
- LIGHT HOUSE SOLAIR 50 - particle counter;
- TESTO 420 – BALOMETER – air flow;
- TESTO 445 – Multifunction ventilation systems;
- Airchek XR 5000 – gas samplers;
- MIRAN SapphIRe – Gas Analyzer.
Expected Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the student must have acquired the knowledge and full understanding of the topics deriving from the achievement of the educational objectives of each of the three teachings of the IC.
1) ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKPLACE HYGIENE
Knowledge and understanding: gain knowledge related to the concepts of general hygiene. Learn about the determinants of health and major risk factors. Understanding health surveillance systems. Learn about environmental hygiene and industrial elements; learn about epidemiology and the basics of health management. Acquire the skills that lead to learning strategies of preventive medicine and health prevention.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: ability to apply the knowledge acquired during the course and to understand the concepts of health determinants and risk factors in the context of an interaction between man and his physical and social environment.

Autonomy of judgement: ability to understand and interpret statistical results of epidemiological studies, using a scientific approach.

Communication skills: ability to expose the concepts clearly, in both oral and written form, using an appropriate scientific language.

Learning skills: to acquire the ability to update themselves independently, by reading texts and scientific articles, also in English. Ability to use the knowledge gained to attend seminars and/or training courses on the subject.
2) OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE
- the current legislation on the protection of health and safety in the workplace
- the main occupational risk factors
- the main occupational diseases and work-related diseases
- risk assessment methods, in particular chemical risk
- the importance of prevention in the workplace
Knowing how to apply behaviors aimed at promoting and maintaining health and safety in the workplace
Knowing how to make the contents of the course their own in order to be able to use them concretely in the working context to which they belong
(3) ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS
The course aims to allow the learning of the specific principles of environmental sampling, and of the laws that govern it;
The conditions of: representativeness of environmental sampling are also analysed; and sample size; analysis of their chemical - physical and toxicological characteristics of the sample.

Waste: correct management of hazardous and non-hazardous special waste. Method of collection (separate collection) and packaging.
Students will be able to recognize and use the tools and methods of sampling and analyzing the chemical agents present in the workplace.
