Course Contents
The course deals with numerical methods such as the approximate determination of functions' zeros, the polynomial interpolation of arbitrary functions, numerical integration and linear equations systems, as well as the least squares method and random numbers. Some programming practice using the C language is foreseen.
Reference Texts

Learning Outcomes
Acquire the basic skills of numerical computation. Knowledge of basic methods of numerical computation including algorithms and programming skills. Understanding simple programs in C language. Ability to combine and modify C programs for the purpose of numerical computation. Analytical skills in developing algorithms suited to solve typical numerical computation problems.
Prerequisites
Fundamental courses of Mathematics and Programmazione 1.
Teaching Methods
Lectures and practice in the computer laboratory.
Lectures develop numerical methods theory while practice in the computer laboratory is meant to develop students' skills in programming algorithms for numerical calculations.
Additional Information
Student progress is evaluated during the computer laboratory sessions.
Assessment Methods
Development of a project and final oral exam. The project requires students to develop a program in C language on a topic agreed among the teacher and the students (1 or 2 students per project) after 2/3 of the lectures have been delivered. The evaluation of the written report on the project, to be sent by the deadline for inscription to the exam session, contributes 1/3 of the final grade. The oral exam is centered on the topics developed during the course and on possible problems with the report on the project and contributes 2/3 of the final grade. The necessary condition to pass the exam is a sufficient score on the report and a score of at least 12/20 for the oral exam.
Detailed Syllabus
Floating point representation of real numbers, representation errors and machine precision. Approximation of the zeros of a function. Approximations of functions and data. Polynomial interpolation. Least squares. Numerical integration. Systems of linear equations. The course includes practice in the Laboratory using the C language.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge of the main numerical computation methods. Being able to apply these methods by developing of C-language programs. Knowledge of basic methods of numerical computation. Understanding simple programs in C language. Ability to combine and modify C programs for the purpose of numerical computation. See also the intended learning objectives described in the section about Mission.
