Learning Outcomes
The main point of the course is to allow a general view of the anatomical structure, physiological role and basical mechanisms of the CNS. The student should become confident with the main interactions between cortical and subcortical structures of the central nervous system. Further we will get inside synaptic plasticity as main tool for growth and development of central nervous system
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the basic prrinciples of Anatomy and Physiology
Teaching Methods
Lessons with short movies readily accessible on net
Discussion concerning classical pathological report of Neurophysiology
Movies of clinical cases and discussion on the modifications of the CNS
Additional Information
Discussion and interaction with students to clarify complex aspects of neurobiology with particular interest devoted to molecular mechanisms underlying the CNS functions
Assessment Methods
Power Point presentation on classical neurophysiological themes and final discussion with the student. The file is supposed to show 20 slides on topics which result more exciting for the student (es: neurotrophic theory, axon guidance, sleep, learning)
Detailed Syllabus
Neuron Biology and Glial cells
Embriogenesis of the CNS
CNS: brain and spinal cord
Synaptic transmission and neurotransmitters
Sensory system. Pain and gate control theory
Synaptic plasticity
Molecular basis of learning and memory
Expected Learning Outcomes
The exam will deal with a Power Point presentation of about 20 minutes on a main topics choosen by the student in Neurophysiology field. The student is expected to discuss his topic compared to all the material explained in the course. This presentation will cover 30/30 points. The exam aims to verify the global knowledge level of the treated arguments and to define the rationale and critical capabilities in dealing with the subject. The laude will be given just in case of critical, analytical, autonomous and logical discussion his theme.
