THEMES, SOURCES AND RESOURCES ABOUT MEDIEVAL ART HISTORY

The sources and library services and / or online will be presented during the lectures.
They will be present on the DIR web page of the course.

The seminar aims to provide students with the means for a proper evaluation of a medieval monument or artwork, having full knowledge of the methodological approach, the sources and the bibliographical and online resources.

None. It's advisable to have included in the plan of studies the examen of medieval art history or have an interest to disciplines within medieval studies.

Seminars, tutorials.

Classes will be held at the LASA (Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art ). As the form of seminars and practical, a regular class attendance is highly recommended.

A final exam is not expected . The final lesson will include a section on assessment by all students through practical activities (research and use of resources , mostly online , reading short epigraphic texts ) to be assigned by the teacher in the previous lessons.
In particular, the achievement of the following learning outcomes will be verified: Knowledge of the subjects of the discipline and of the relative bibliography (40% of the evaluation); individual in-depth study of individual themes through paper and online sources and resources (40% of the evaluation); ability to read and interpret, also with regard to the aspects of content, graphics and layout, short epigraphic texts of the Middle Ages (20% of the evaluation). The exam will not end with the attribution of a vote, but with a suitability assessment (SUITABLE / NOT SUITABLE), which will be obtained with attainment of at least 80% of a theoretical fully positive judgment.

The seminar aims to illustrate some of the fundamental themes of Medieval Art History and the methodologies applied in the study of the discipline. At the same time, students will be offered a look at a wide range on the sources and bibliographic resources, traditional and/or online, useful to the study and research in disciplines having as their object the study of architectural and artistic European monuments and manufacts from late Antiquities to the beginning of the Renaissance. Some part of the lessons will be dedicated to medieval epigraphy problems, with reading exercises.

1 - Knowledge of the salient themes of the discipline and of the methods for its study.
2 - Master the main bibliographic and online resources for the study of the discipline, with knowledge of the different ways of interrogating the resources themselves.
3 - Ability to act independently in the study and writing of academic texts concerning the discipline.
4 - Reliable possession of simple basic notions for reading and interpreting medieval epigraphic texts related to monuments and works of art and useful for their study.
