This course introduces the basic tools of analysis, comprehension, reading and enjoyment of Cultural Heritage focusing on aspects related to Cultural Tourism.

The course aims to provide students with a framework of knowledge for the acquisition of tools and methods for analyzing, understanding and the conscious use of cultural heritage. It will visually present: artifacts of an artistic nature, represent the history of civilization, and in context, represent the local, regional and international areas. The reading and interpretation of the works of art will be analyzed in relation to the historical context, geographical and cultural affiliation. The students will find hidden meanings within the relationships between artists and patrons. And they will examine what resources were allocated by the company who purchased the art, and the techniques used to employ the artists. Students should be able to operate by noting similarities.

The course makes use of the following teaching methods: lectures with the help of iconographic material, analysis and discussion of case studies, and exercises and guided tours. The teaching methodology aims to integrate knowledge acquired by students in the arts, in geography, and in economy and tourism. The students will seek to develop the ability to forge links with other disciplines, noting that the work of art flows together with the aspects and components of the different fields of knowledge. The student is required to pass a written test and to present a thematic study.

The first part – Fundamentals The introduction to artistic literature from antiquity to the late Middle Ages. The geography of the Romanesque. The Gothic universe. The comparisons between architecture and sculpture, Romanesque and Gothic. The fourteenth and fifteenth-century Italian Renaissance. Flemish Art The art of the Catholic Reform. Europe of the sixteenth century The Baroque. The Netherlands and Spain in the seventeenth century. Late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Piedmont, Italy and Europe. Art between Enlightenment and Romanticism. The study of ancient and the birth of archeology. Mention about: The nineteenth century in France and in Europe The art between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: new discoveries, new materials
The second part – Cultural Heritage Assets/Art work The students will study about the protection, conservation and enhancement of the art and analyze those institutions responsible for the safekeeping of the art. International Organizations The students will learn about who the international organizations are, that house the art and what their function is Unesco sites and non-European art Cultural tourism and cities of art. The third part – Case studies European Cultural Routes: The Santiago De Compostela Pilgrim Routes, The Via Francigena, Transromanica -The Romanesque Routes of European Heritage- Square, Villages and Cities of Art. The Sacred Mountains. Baroque and late Baroque in Piedmont. Alessandro Antonelli. The design of Iconic landmarks and contemporary iconic buildings: city and symbols from the past to the twenty first century.

The acquisition of the ethics of responsibility and awareness of the cultural value of Heritage is required in terms of sustainable development, protection of the environment, the landscape, historical and artistic heritage. The knowledge of the main issues related to its protection, conservation and enhancement. The knowledge of the features of the history of art, in particular the modern age. The ability to recognize, analyze and contextualise the most important works, to develop personal thoughts and use appropriate terminology.
