The course aims to provide conceptual and analytical tools suitable for address the issue of migration processes from a sociological perspective, with particular attention to the impact they have on territories in terms of policies and services.

The course aims to develop in students the knowledge and skills useful for:
- analyse and understand the complexity that characterises migration processes
- acquire critical competence regarding common-sense perspectives
- use sociological categories in addressing migration issues
- to know how to transfer some acquired cognitive skills into work practice

The course will be conducted in seminar format. The lecture part by the professor will be followed by exercises, presentations of scientific articles
by the students, and group discussions.

The object of study and its characteristics; The different types of immigrants; Contexts and trends; Phases and cycles of immigration; Macrosociological explanations from the side of places of origin: push factors; Microsociological explanations: from individual choices to family strategies; In the intermediate space: social networks and migratory institutions; Incidence and unexpected consequences of normative regulation

Knowledge:
- acquisition of a sociological approach to the themes of migration processes
- knowledge of the scientific debate on the topics covered in the course

Skills:
- to be able to present in written form an argued summary of some of the topics dealt with with specific references to the debate and relevant data and in the form of
form of a scientific text
- being able to present in oral form the contents (assumptions, theses, arguments) of the texts analysed with correct terminology.
