Reference Texts
Books are not recommended, the teaching material provided in class is
sufficient.
Learning Outcomes
The module aims to provide the essential notions of cellular and
molecular biology that will provide the student with the tools necessary to get to know and describe in an organic way the structure of eukaryotic cells and their functions.
Prerequisites
No Required background knowledge
Teaching Methods
Lectures, classroom discussion, bibliographic research
Additional Information
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/services-students-physical-or-learning-disabilities
Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
Multiple choice written exam (4 options of which only one is exact).
The overall exam of the course is made up of a set of individual quizzes relating to each module of the course, proposed simultaneously on the same exam date. From the individual evaluation of the same, votes will emerge which, following collective discussion, will give rise to the proposed vote. DIR platform will be used to perform the exam.
Detailed Syllabus
Eukaryotes and hints of prokaryotes. The animal cell and organelles.
Dogma of biology: DNA, RNA, proteins. Replication, transcription,
translation. Receptors, ligands and hints of signal transduction pathways.
Genetics: autosomal dominant and recessive diseases, family trees.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: Knowledge related to differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, connection between chemical composition and function of biological macromolecules, cellular structures of animal cells, function of organelles and components and functions of endomembrane and cytoskeleton systems, Central Dogma of Biology and the relationship between genes and proteins, DNA replication, transcription and translation in eukaryotes. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: Ability to use acquired knowledge and concepts to think critically, showing the ability to make connections between different topics.
