Principles of pharmacology: pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

Learning Outcomes
To promote knowledge and understandingof the principles of pharmacology, and of the mechanisms and therapeutic use of the main drugs implied in the field of rehabilitation.
Prerequisites
Students are required to have basic notions of biochemistry, anatomy, physiology and pathology.

• Principles of pharmacokinetics: routes of administration, absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs.
• Principles of pharmacodynamics: agonist, antagonist, receptors and dose-response
• Muscle relaxant drugs; neuromuscolar blocking drugs: depolarizing and non-depolarizing drugs.
Neuromuscolar junctions and the cholinergic system.
• Drugs used to treat spasticity’. Baclofen, diazepam and tetrazepam, tizanidine, dantrolene. Botulinum toxin
•Antiparkinson drugs: L-DOPA, dopamine agonists, MAO-B and COMT inhibitors, amantadine, colinergic antgonists.
• Drugs to treat Alzheimer disease.
• Anti-inflammatory drugs: Steroids and NSAID
• Local anesthetics
• Analgesic opioids
•Anti-hypertensive drugs
Expected Learning Outcomes
Students are expected to show knowledge, understanding of (and ability to apply) the basic pharmacology and the main characteristics of the drugs mainly implied in the field of rehabilitation.
