Course Contents
Numbers and number sense. Orders of magnitude. Percents. Concept of function and introduction to differential and integral calculus. Proofs. Differential equations. Introduction to game theory

Learning Outcomes
Provide the student with mathematical foundations that are necessary to attend the scientific and economic courses within the undergraduate studies, with a specific focus on problem solving
Prerequisites
Basic notions of arithmetic, algebra and geometry. Some knowledge about elementary functions and their graph, in particular: exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions.
Teaching Methods
Each lesson will start with a problem related to sustainability: students in small groups will try to solve it and a final discussion will summarize the mathematical contents necessary to tackle the initial problem. On the moodle platform, various materials for individual study will be accompanied by presentations of the various problems addressed. A tutor will also be present for the exam preparation.

The course is developed on the line of Building Thinking Classroom methodology
Assessment Methods
A written text and an oral communication, which consists in an exposition of a topic, chosen by the student, that relates mathematics to the real world, with a focus on sustainable issues.

(a) Numbers and the meaning of the number. Orders of magnitude. Application to the themes of resource exploitation. (b) Percentages. Application to GDP. (c) Concept of function and introduction to differential and integral calculus. Demonstrations. Applications to various modeling problems. (e) Differential equations. Applications to climate physics. (f) Outline of game theory. Applications to the economy.
Expected Learning Outcomes
In line with the goals of the undergratuate course, the expected learning outcomes concern the knowledge and understanding of the basic mathematical tools that will be used by the student to know and understand the fundamentals of physics, chemistry and economics applied and declined in the topic of environmental, social and economic sustainability.
