Course Contents
Definition of the question for searching information in biomedical databases, starting from a clinical case or a public health problem. The biomedical databases of scientific literature. The elaboration of sensitive and specific search strategies to be applied to biomedical databases. Characteristics, opportunities and limits of Practice Guidelines. The institutional sources of Practice Guidelines. The critical assessment of scientific reports.

Learning Outcomes
The course aims to apply the tools of Evidence-Based Practice for searching, selecting, assessing and using the results of scientific research for solving clinical and public health problems.
Prerequisites
Bases of medical statistics; advanced knowledge of epidemiologic study designs (primary and secondary)
Teaching Methods
Lectures; small group work; literature search; critical reading and assessment of scientific papers; PP presentation; plenary discussions.
Additional Information
The course is integrated with the course of Statistics for EBM-MED01 and provides also 1 credit of ADE (Elective path of Evidence Based Medicine).
Assessment Methods
Written exam consisting in 2 open questions on small group work.
Detailed Syllabus
Evidence Based Medicine and Evidence Based Practice. Systematic Reviews, Guidelines, Point of Care summaries; other tools of synthesis of the evidence. Sources of scientific evidence. Biomedical databases (Medline, Embase, Psychinfo, Cochrane). Checklist for evaluating the quality of primary and secondary studies (CASP), and of Guidelines (AGREE).
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding - to know principles and methods of Evidence Based Practice; - to know the bibliographic sources available on the web and the biomedical databases; - to know the methods for assessing the quality of a scientific report. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding - to define a research question in terms of Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome - based on PICO, identify the keywords for the bibliographic search - to use bibliographical sources and databases available on the web; - to elaborate search strings to be applied on biomedical databases; - to use evaluation tools and interpret the results; - to apply the results of scientific research to nursing practice by integrating them with the experience, patient preferences and available resources; - to summarize the results of research using scientific language. Autonomy of judgment - to take health care decisions based on the results of scientific research; - to assess the quality of a scientific report. Communication skills - to use scientific language orally and in writing; - to present and discuss the results of a teamwork; - to work in team.
