Due to its integrative character, the course provides students with a brief introduction to principles and sources of family law, within the broader system of private law. By building on case law materials, the course also deals with currently debated topics in the domain of family law.

Since the course is integrative there is no suggested textbook. Useful material will be provided through DIR, with a collection of doctrinal essays and judgments.

The course aims at providing students with a basic understanding of family law within the Italian legal system. Another objective is to reach a more detailed comprehension of some currently debated topics relevant to family law.

The course is divided in three lectures and presents a variety of teaching methods: - face-to-face lectures are used for an overview of family law and its principles and sources; - currently debated topics are addressed in more participatory seminars; in this respect students are supposed to read and understand in advance materials provided on DIR.

As to the exam students are asked to write a paper related to a topic provided by the teacher.

- evolution and sources of family law - family law today: pluralism in family models; role of legal feminism; family law within the broader legal system - Topics currently at stake (e.g. rules on the surname; surrogacy; adoption of children; allocation of a family home; maintenance obligations, and the like).

Estimated learning outcomes are about the understanding of evolutions and current scope of family law within the Italian legal system. Knowledge of some major currently debated topics is an estimated learning outcome as well.
