Applied physiology deals with the quantitative characterization of the function of organs and apparatuses in normal, pathological and particular environmental conditions.

Learning Outcomes
The course aims to provide students with knowledge and applications of cellular and organ physiology, in both normal and pathological conditions. Students will acquire critical thinking skills by analyzing relevant literature to delve deeper into the application of different topics. Communication skills will also be stimulated through the use of appropriate terminology.

Assessment Methods
The exam consists of a written test and of platform presentation. The written test evaluates the student's ability to apply the knowledge acquired during the course and consists of open-ended questions The level of difficulty of the questions corresponds to the program carried out and to the reference texts indicated on DIR. For each of the questions are assigned up to 8 points. To achieve a passing grade, students must demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the core concepts and topics covered in the course. To achieve an excellent grade, a student must not only show a solid grasp of the foundational knowledge but also the ability to create connections between the various topics related to the requested subject. During the written test it is not allowed to consult notes, books or other material. The evaluation is expressed in thirtieths (minimum mark 18).
Detailed Syllabus
- Physiology of aging - Fetal and pregnancy physiology - Hormonal regulation of growth - Nutrient requirements and regulation of food intake - Chronobiology - Sleep physiology - Thermoregulation - Adaptations to the environment - Exercise physiology - Physiology of taste and smell For each topic, it will be covered the physiological foundations and their application in the fields of nutrition and/or the environment. It will also be proposed in-depth topics based on scientific literature to help students acquire critical thinking skills and the ability to apply concepts discussed during the lectures. Students will also be encouraged to present some of the topics using either specialized or common language. When opportunities arise during the lectures, we will focus on gender-related topics.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding Students will gain autonomy in interpreting experimental data and in setting up strategies for applying physiology. Applied Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the course, students will be able to connect with an experimental approach and use appropriate scientific terminology. Making Judgments Students will develop the ability to critically analyze elements of the discipline and make independent judgments within the field. Communication Skills Students will be able to use appropriate scientific terminology and describe scientific topics with a logical and rational approach. Learning Abilities Students will develop the capacity to use course materials for a critical and reasoned study.
