Environmental history and the History of nationalism (History of Ukraine from the birth of the national movement to Russian invasion).

The course consists of 2 modules: A) “Environmental History 1° level” and B) “History of nations and of nationalisms”. Two programmes are foreseen for attending and non-attending students.

Basic historical knowledge.

The course will consist mainly of frontal lectures, although they will sometime involve the direct involvement of students in reading and analyzing some texts.

The course consists of 2 modules: A) “Environmental History 1° level” and B) “History of nations and of nationalisms”; each course has its own specific assessment method (see the course descriptions). The overall assessment of the examination could take into account the student's ability to improve their ability to answer questions and their general ability to organise their work.

The course consists of 2 modules: A) “Environmental History 1° level” and B) “History of nations and of nationalisms”. The first module will pertains: • Themes and chronologies in the environmental history. • The definition of the discipline. • The environmental history and the debate on the dynamics of environmental resources in the past and today. • Topics and objects of environmental history. • Political debate and environment in early modern and modern history. • The history of the landscape (politics, economics, culture and society). • The relationship between city and country in history. • The industrialisation and the environment. • Knowledge and control of the environmental resources (waters, woodlands, animals,.). • Property, practices and environmentale resources. • Climate history. • Globalization and environment. • The concept of Anthropocene. The lessons of the second module will take place according to the following outline: Lesson 1: Introduction to the course: practical issues. What is a nation?: history and the public use of history. - Lesson 2: Imperial Russia. - Lesson 3: The birth of the Ukrainian national movement in the nineteenth century. - Lesson 4: Ukrainian independence in the First World War and in the civil war. - Lesson 5: Soviet collective identities and Soviet Ukraine. - Lesson 6: Ukrainians in Europe and the Second World War. - Lesson 7: The Ukrainian diaspora in the West. - Lesson 8: The soviet Thaw. - Lesson 9: The Sixties and the Seventies. - Lesson 10: From autonomy to Ukrainian independence. - Lesson 11: Putin’s Russia and Russian national identity. - Lesson 12: The history of Memorial. - Lesson 13: The Orange Revolution and the Revolution of Dignity. - Lesson 14: Ukraine and the war. - Lesson 15: Ukraine’s participation in the ESC. The topics of the course will be constantly analyzed in connection with the current applications in history research and teaching methodology, also through the exemplification and development of didactic exercises. Gender issues: during the first lessons, the implications of the discussion on gender in the field of environmental history will be discussed.
