Introduction to modern and contemporary Spanish Literature

BASIC EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: 1. KNOWLEDGE • Knowledge of the reflection on the identity of Spain between 19th and 20th centuries. • Knowledge of the main aesthetic trends of Spanish literature from the nineteenth century until today, in dramatic and narrative texts. 2. SKILLS • Ability to assess the degree of adhesion of a text or an author to the movement and to the corresponding genre (19th and 20th centuries). • Acquisition of the main textual analysis tools of a play and a novel. 3. TRANSVERSAL SKILLS • Clear and concise presentation skills, with an organic vision of the concepts of the course. HIGHER LEVEL EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: 1. SKILLS • Being able to analyze a narrative text and a theatrical text highlighting their differences with respect to the generic canon, in an evolutionary framework of the literary phenomenon. 2. TRANSVERSAL SKILLS • Ability to express one's own vision of the text, with autonomy of judgment, in a reasoned and analytical way.

Oral exam lasting about twenty minutes, in Italian for both modules. The oral examination consists in a discussion about the themes and subjects illustrated in class. The first question is about the general contextualization of authors and works from an historical and literary perspective; the following questions are about the specific works that have been analyzed in class. To achieve top-marks, the student has to demonstrate excellent knowledge of the topics covered in the course, great expressive mastery, mastery of textual analysis terminology, personal content processing skills. An exam will be evaluated as sufficient if the student reveals some lack of preparation in the topics covered, expressive difficulties, not complete mastery of literary technical language and little autonomy of judgment. Finally, the student's exam showing large gaps in preparation, poor expressive ability, minimal knowledge of analysis techniques and no independence of criteria will be considered insufficient.

The course, in its double articulation, will offer an overview on the reflection on the identity of Spain in the periods of historical-social crisis at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, especially in the theatrical texts and a history of literary movements and their development in the theatrical and narrative field, between the end of the nineteenth century and the 2000s. EXPECTED RESULTS FOR A BASIC PREPARATION: 1. KNOWLEDGE • Knowledge of the main theatrical and narrative trends of Spanish literature from the end of the 19th century to the 2000s. • Knowledge of the Spanish history of the same period and the reflection on the identity of Spain in times of national crisis. • Reading of the proposed texts and their classification within the production of the respective authors. 2. SKILLS • Acquisition of a textual analysis method. • Being able to evaluate the degree of adhesion of a given work to the code of the genre and to the literary movement in which it belongs. 3. TRANSVERSAL SKILLS • Ability to clearly explain the topics of the course, with a good overall view. EXPECTED RESULTS FOR A HIGHER GRADE PREPARATION: 1. SKILLS • Distinction between the different trends of the literary genre starting from the analysis of the text. • Being able to recognize the themes of the historical-social reflection of the authors at the different levels of the text. 2. TRANSVERSAL SKILLS • Being able to present and defend one's judgment on a theoretical and practical basis. • Being able to express the results of literary analysis with the appropriate terminology and with insights of personal elaboration and independence of judgment.
