Sex and power. Patriarchy, sexual contract and consent

Il corso si propone, a un livello di base, di fornire: 1. (conoscenze e comprensione): le conoscenze fondamentali relative ai dibattiti sul concetto di patriarcato e sul tema del consenso sessuale; 2. (capacità di applicare conoscenze comprensione): capacità di utilizzare le conoscenze acquisite per analizzare fenomeni contemporanei; 3. (autonomia di giudizio): la capacità di distinguere i diversi argomenti in merito al tema del consenso; 4. (abilità comunicative): la capacità di presentare in modo e chiaro e corretto le conoscenze acquisite; 5. (capacità di apprendimento): una capacità sufficiente di analisi dei testi e di collegamento degli argomenti trattati. A un livello più avanzato il corso si propone di consentire l'acquisizione di: 1. (conoscenze e comprensione): una conoscenza approfondita dell'opera di Carole Pateman e del movimento Mee-too; 2. (capacità di applicare conoscenze comprensione): una buona capacità di ricostruire in modo preciso e approfondito le argomentazioni del testo di Pateman e di utlizzarle per la comprensione di fenomeni contemporanei; 3. (autonomia di giudizio): una buona capacità di analizzare in modo critico le differenti argomentazioni; 4. (abilità comunicative): una buona capacità di presentare in modo e chiaro e corretto le conoscenze acquisite, mostrando piena padronanza della terminologia e del lessico; 5. (capacità di apprendimento): una buona capacità di analisi dei testi e di collegamento degli argomenti trattati, dimostrando consapevolezza delle problematiche connesse all'interpretazione dei classici e capacità di svolgere approfondimenti individuali.

The course will take place in the first semester of 2025-26. Please register for the course via the DIR platform, which will be activated by early November 2026. The exam consists of a 10,000-character written paper on one of the topics covered during the course. You will also be required to give an oral presentation of the paper.

Is the concept of patriarchy still relevant in explaining feminicides, sexual harassment and cases such as Pelicot's and the website 'My Wife'? To answer this question, we will examine Carole Pateman's theories on classic and modern patriarchy, as well as the concepts of the social, sexual and marriage contracts.

- knowledge and comprehension: to acquire the ability to: a) frame, analyse and understand the classical texts of political thought in their particular historical context; b) recognise the different theoretical positions with respect to the concepts of patriarchy, classic and modern; c) recognise and understand some interpretative traditions in disagreement with each other; d) recognise the argumentative structure of the texts considered; - ability to apply knowledge and understanding: a) ability to acquire a historical and critical perspective with respect to current debates on topics such as social contract, sexual contract, marriage contract; b) ability to present in oral form the arguments analysed and to place them in the appropriate historical context; - expression of judgements: ability to weigh up the various arguments considered and to check their assumptions and consequences, applying them to specific cases; - communication skills: ability to present the analysed texts correctly in oral form; - study skills: ability to independently study primary sources and critical essays by contemporary authors.
