Social history: gender, sexuality, violence and social control. Introduction to Cultural History: gender history, the history of food, the study of collective memory and of the mass cultural production, the idea of disability and handicap, the so-called “animal history".

The course consists of 2 modules: A) “Methodology of the historical research 2° level” (=“Social history”, prof. Tigrino) and B) “Contemporary history 2° level” (prof. Bellezza). Two programmes are foreseen for attending and non-attending students.

Knowledge of the main features of early modern, modern and contemporary history is required.

Both modules include lectures. They also includes parts in form of a seminar with short oral reports on the methodology and topics of the course.

The overall assessment of the examination could take into account the student's ability to improve their ability to answer questions and their general ability to organise their work

The course consists of 2 modules: A) “Methodology of the historical research 2° level”; and B) “Contemporary history 2° level”. The first module will pertains the social history, and specifically it will ill focus upon gender, sexuality violence and social control in the early modern and modern period, also with interdisciplinary comparison. Outline of the lectures: • Social history and the history of modern society. • Historiography and the issues of social, economic, political and cultural history. • Gender, sexuality, violence and social control in the modern and contemporary history: historiographical debate. • Gender, sexuality, violence and social control in the modern and contemporary history: case-studies. Gender issues: the course is specifically dedicated to the theme of gender in history. The lessons of the second module will take place according to the following outline: - Lesson 1: Introduction to the course and practical information. What is cultural history?: methodological introduction. - Lesson 2: The document of cultural history. - Lesson 3: History of women, gender history and history of sexuality. - Lesson 4: Orientalism and Indian Subaltern Studies. - Lesson 5: Mass culture: animals and food as themes of cultural history. - Lesson 6: A cultural history of disability. - Lesson 7: Russian culture from the tsarist empire to Stalinist kulturnost. - Lesson 8: The culture of the Thaw: how to analyze an oral source and a song. - Lesson 9: The public use of history from the Historikerstreit to the Italian “civil war”. - Lesson 10: Places of memory and the example of memorials in Ukraine. - Lesson 11: Cultural history of music: the case of ESC. - Lesson 12: An concrete example of cultural history (with the participation of a guest lecturer). - Lesson 13: Seminar presentations. - Lesson 14: Seminar presentations. - Lesson 15: Seminar presentations. Gender issues: parts of the course are specifically dedicated to the theme of gender in history.
