Environmental history (early modern and modern history); research and teaching of geography.

The course consists of 2 modules: A) "Environmental history" (triennale) and B) "Geography teaching". Two programmes are foreseen for attending and non-attending students.

Basic historical knowledge; basic knowledge of human and economic geography.

Both modules include lectures. The first module also includes: critical reading and critical analysis of the main historiographic themes and of the historical sources of the texts of the course, with particular attention to teaching methods; individual study. At the request of attending students, during the lessons it will be possible to entertain individual presentation of part of the textbooks. Second module: itinerant lectures in Vercelli region, slides, powerpoint presentations, materials and link on case studies and discussions in class and in the DIR platform.

Those who have already taken the exam “Storia ambientale” or “Storia ambientale triennale in previous academic years are required to contact prof. Tigrino to redefine the texts for the exam. Students are advised to register on DIR (Didattica In Rete), where notices and communications will be posted, and where will be disposable some materials of the lectures. This course gives 6 credits in the M - GGR / 01 sector. These credits are essential for access to teaching in secondary school. The overall assessment of the examination could take into account the student's ability to improve their ability to answer questions and their general ability to organise their work.

The first module will focus on: • Themes and chronologies in the environmental history. • The definition of the discipline. • The environmental history and the debate on the dynamics of environmental resources in the past and today. • Topics and objects of environmental history. • Political debate and environment in early modern and modern history. • The history of the landscape (politics, economics, culture and society). • The relationship between city and country in history. • The industrialisation and the environment. • Knowledge and control of the environmental resources (waters, woodlands, animals,.). • Property, practices and environmentale resources. • Climate history. • Globalization and environment. • The concept of Anthropocene. The second module will focus on: current issues in geographical research and teaching; themes, methods and tools; reflections on the history of geographic education; main teaching methodologies and the use of photography; GIS for a modern Geography; a Geography of emotions. The topics of the courses will be constantly analyzed in connection with the current applications in history and geography research and teaching methodology, also through the exemplification and development of didactic exercises. Gender issues: specific insights are foreseen in both modules.

The course aims to provide analytical tools to understand the main topics and chronologies of environmental history, also with some references to the historiographic debate, in an interdisciplinary perspective. The course aims to provide also advanced tools to understand the contemporary world geography and the main differences in the contemporary development.
