The Integrated Course of Letteratura italiana magistrale I+II (12 cfu) consists of the two courses Letteratura italiana magistrale I (6 cfu; Prof. Curreri) and Letteratura italiana magistrale II (6 cfu; Prof. Gibellini). Each year the specific topics of the two courses change. What remains constant is the focus on authors, works and essential issues in Italian literature, their historical contextualisation and the use of appropriate tools for analysing, interpreting and commenting on the literary text. The two courses for the academic year 2025/2026 aim to focus more closely on the Italian literary twentieth century, focusing respectively on criticism and poetry. ACADEMIC YEAR 2025/2026: The course in ITALIAN LITERATURE MAGISTRALE I is dedicated to the critical personalities who in the last century - between language and literature, philology and structuralism, theory and comparatistics, psychoanalysis and sociology, narratology and semiology, aesthetics of reception and history of culture... - have held sway over a good part of our literary studies, in universities and beyond. The ITALIAN LITERATURE MAGISTRALE II course is dedicated to Eugenio Montale's Ossi si seppia.

The course in ITALIAN LITERATURE MAGISTRALE I has an ethical as well as a political purpose: (a) it wants to interweave didactics, research and society in a plural and non-standardised manner: (b) it wants to challenge the growing (and wretched) abandonment, in universities, of the history of criticism; (c) it makes clear the capacity of literary studies to affect social discourse, contributing - with their freedom and diversity - to restore as a whole a richer, less provincial, more complex culture; (d) it claims the indispensable contribution that literary scholars have made to the Italian twentieth century and (perhaps) are still able to make. The course of ITALIAN LITERATURE MAGISTRALE II has as its objectives the knowledge of Eugenio Montale's life, poetics and works (basic level), the understanding of 20th century Italian literature texts (with particular attention to Montale's Ossi di seppia) through correct paraphrasing (basic level) and attention to their linguistic and stylistic dimension (advanced level), the ability to analyse texts by linking ideological and literary elements (basic level), the ability to analyse texts in an intertextual perspective and to discuss problems of interpretation (advanced level). Common objectives of the two courses are the development of the ability to analyse and historically contextualise literary texts, as well as communicative skills (at a basic level, the ability to explain in an orderly and clear manner the concepts and data learnt, using appropriate language; at an advanced level, the ability to present the results of the study with argumentative effectiveness and critical autonomy) and the expression of judgements (at an advanced level, the ability to identify data and tools useful for formulating reasoned evaluations of the texts and problems addressed).

Basic historical-literary, linguistic-stylistic, metrics and critical knowledge.

Frontal lessons with discussion; reading and commenting on the texts in the classroom, with questions and discussion; online teaching (DIR) if necessary.

The final mark will be awarded on the basis of the overall result of the examination, obtained by considering the results of the two partial examinations, which, although each one deals with the reference programme in its own specific way, have as common criteria the assessment of the degree of knowledge and comprehension of the texts in the programme, the ability to apply knowledge to the text or to the proposed interpretative problem, the degree of expressive, linguistic and argumentative competence, according to the parameters provided under ‘Learning objectives’. LETTERATURA ITALIANA MAGISTRALE I: The final exam consists of an oral examination, which will focus on the following points: 1. Verification of knowledge of the research found in 20th century Italian criticism, and in particular that which is to be found in the long generation born between 1920 and 1940, starting from the text adopted and indicated above and corresponding to 50% of the weight on the exam grade; 2. Testing of skills in examining and interpreting the critics and texts examined (with particular attention to the texts chosen and read by the teacher in the classroom) and at the same time of communication skills and potential for already expressing an autonomous critical capacity, starting with a question on a couple of specific essays, corresponding to 50% of the exam grade. At least acceptable answers to each of the questions will be required to pass the examination. LETTERATURA ITALIANA MAGISTRALE II: The final exam consists of a written exam, which will focus on the following points: 1. Verification of the ability to interpret texts (with particular attention to the course topic), and together with the communication skills and the ability to express judgments: a question on an issue, theme or problem among those addressed in the study of Ossi di seppia, in order to verify both the knowledge and the degree of in-depth analysis and critical reworking of the texts – 50% of the weight on the exam grade; 2. Verification of the ability to examine and interpret texts, to express judgments, and to apply oneself to the analysis of literary texts: a question consisting of the analysis and commentary of a text of Ossi di seppia, or of one among those anthologized in the file prepared by the teacher – 50% of the weight on the exam grade. To pass the exam, it will be necessary to answer each of the questions at least sufficiently.

In order to attain the knowledge and skills corresponding to the sufficiency level, the student is asked to demonstrate: (KNOWLEDGE) to know the varied types and personalities of most of the Italian critics of the second half of the 20th century (Letteratura italiana magistrale I); to know the biography, poetics and work of Eugenio Montale (Letteratura italiana magistrale II); (SKILLS) to be able to analyse and interpret critical texts, linking the historical-literary and linguistic elements to the ethical and political ones (Letteratura italiana magistrale I), and twentieth-century literary texts (and in particular Montale's Ossi di seppia), linking the ideological elements to the more strictly literary ones (Letteratura italiana magistrale II); (TRANSVERSAL SKILLS) to be able to present in a clear and effective way knowledge, information and opinions related to the texts and problems dealt with, using appropriate language and terminology. For the attainment of an advanced level, you are asked to demonstrate: an autonomous vision of the themes addressed in the lessons, combined with the ability to analyse and synthesise; a full mastery of expression.
