The course aims, at a basic level, to transfer to students: - the basic knowledge related to the main characteristics of the social and economic organization of the tourism sector; - the ability to frame the main phenomena dealt with during the course and to understand the main features and dynamics of the tourism from the local to the global scale; -the ability to make judgements on tourism development based on the principles of ecosystem integrity, economic efficiency and social integrity. At a more advanced level, the aim of the course is to acquire: - an in-depth and full knowledge of the most relevant topics of Tourism Geography; - to produce new solutions, using appropriate theoretical knowledge acquired and the specific terminology learnt. The measurement of the mentioned objectives will be possible during the examination

The exam is written and will be organized as follows: 1) checking the acquired knowledge on topics treated during the course, in relation to specific themes concerning Tourism Geography (example of question: “What is the UN WTO definition of tourist?”); 2) check of the ability to apply knowledge and its understanding, by contextualizing the main examined phenomena, in time, space and in an appropriate geographical framework, the role of humanity in shaping the organization of the tourism sector (example of question: “What are the main drivers of the current tourism demand?”) 3) check of the ability in expressing critical opinions on the natural and anthropic dynamics that cause territorial differences, also through an analysis of the bibliography proposed (example of question: What are the main limits of some tourism destinations?”); 4) check of the ability in communicating acquired knowledge and in organizing a synthetic presentation of the main problems about the organization of the territory (example of question: “what are its main limts and more important applications of evolution models?”). The exam consists in five of them. The grade is expressed in thirtieths and the evaluation is carried out according to the following parameters: A paper that demonstrates fair or excellent knowledge of the subject will be graded as appreciable or excellent; one that demonstrates minimal knowledge of the syllabus and poor personal opinions will be graded as sufficient. A paper that shows formative deficiencies and an inability to contextualise will be graded as insufficient.

Tourism geography in today’s world. Definitions of tourist. Statistical data for the study of tourism. Historical evolution of tourism. Tourism destinations. The factors of attractiveness of a tourist destination. Tourism demand and offer. International tourist flows (incoming and outcoming). World regional of tourism. The tourist attractiveness: natural, cultural, immaterial. Accessibility and usability. Organisation and planning of tourism spaces. Spatial models of tourism development (Miossec, Plog, life cycle, Buttel, etc.). Types of tourism. concepts of elsewhere, tourism and authenticity.INTEGRATING THE GENDER DIMENSION This course dedicates a session to the themes of gender and tourism. In particular, the relationship between gender and tourism brings with it multiple effects on the landscape, the divided spaces, the gender relations within host communities, and the labour market.

This course aims to offer an understanding of the contemporary tourism geography. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - Knowledge cultural, economic and political geography; Knowledge of the main types of tourists/ tourisms and characteristics of the industry; Knowledge the planning and the evolution of the tourism space; Knowledge of the other and the elsewhere, tourism and authenticity; Critical understanding of the topics studied. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - Ability to understand the connections between texts and geographical contexts, using the critical and methodological tools appropriate to the analysis; - Ability to use the appropriate lexicon to communicate - clearly and effectively - knowledge, information and opinions related to the topics dealt with.
