Course Contents
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ABILITY: Students will be able to understand reasons, alternative modes and critical issues of the public intervention in modern economies. CAPABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Students will be able to apply the economic theory to the analysis of the main areas of public intervention (e.g. pensions, health care, education, assistance, public utilities) and its organization across government levels at national and supranational level. AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT: Students will be able to critically understand the main issues related to public intervention in order to be able to autonomously assess future interventions in this area. LEARNING ABILITY: The learning process will allow the student to frame the policy questions in theoretical terms and to choose the appropriate data to understand the role of the government in modern economies.

Learning Outcomes
Public intervention in modern economies is pervasive. Governments intervene to redistribute resources and to provide goods and services that private markets are unable to offer optimally. The course aims at offering an analysis of the reasons for public intervention in the main areas of interest (Welfare State, public utilities), the ways in which this intervention is carried out and, finally, the critical issues that may arise from public intervention.

Lectures. Interactions and discussions with the students attending lectures will be encouraged.

Assessment Methods
Written individual exam (open questions). Time: 1 hour. It is possible to seat for the exam up to three times per academic year.

Incorporating the gender perspective: Gender-related topics will be addressed in all lectures on Welfare State policies.
