Introduction to Forensic Medicine and Human Rights. This course will assess the role of forensic medicine in protecting human rights in various contexts, including gender-based violence, migration, imprisonment, illegal organ trafficking and mass disasters.

Knowledge and understanding: understanding the definition of forensic medicine and human rights; understanding the role of forensic medicine in protecting human rights in various contexts, ranging from gender-based violence to illicit organ trafficking, from migrants to prisoners, to mass disasters. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: be able to identify situations in which forensic medicine can provide support for the protection of human rights; be able to identify the most appropriate medico-legal strategies in the different contexts covered in class in order to protect human rights.

The course includes innovative and integrated teaching methods, including lectures, video recordings, and (a)synchronous online activities to apply the knowledge acquired.

The exam is written and in-person, and consists of a quiz with multiple-choice questions. The final grade is expressed in thirtieths, and to pass the exam, a student must achieve at least 18/30. To pass the exam, students must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of at least the fundamental concepts of the subject. To achieve a passing grade, students must be familiar with the role of forensic medicine in the protection of human rights and be able to demonstrate acquisition of the relevant basic knowledge of the various topics covered. To achieve a high grade, students must demonstrate complete mastery of the topics covered.

During the lessons, the relationship between forensic medicine and human rights will be discussed. Starting with general principles, the topic will be explored in depth in the following circumstances: Gender-based violence Female genital mutilation - Violence against children - Violence against the elderly - Restraints - Migrants - Torture - Illegal organ trafficking - Prisoners - Mass disasters Gender mainstreaming: Gender issues are widely incorporated into the topics covered.

Knowledge and understanding: define forensic medicine and human rights; illustrate the role of forensic medicine in protecting human rights in various contexts. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: identify situations in which forensic medicine can provide support for the protection of human rights; identify the most appropriate medico-legal strategies in the various contexts covered in class in order to protect human rights.
