Graduates of the Master’s Degree Class in Nursing and Obstetric Sciences will have to deepen the study of the specific discipline and research, with the aim of expressing advanced skills in the field of care, organization, education, in response to health problems arising in the context of critical life. Based on the acquired knowledge, they are able to take into account, in the programming and management of health care personnel, both the needs of the community, the development of new methods of work organization, and technological innovation and information technology, both the planning and organisation of educational activities and the standardisation of operating standards to those of the European Union.
They will have to develop, also as a result of the experience gained through an adequate activity of experiential internship, an integrated approach to the organizational and assistance problems in the field of vital criticality, qualified by mastery of advanced care skills and health management procedures. The methodological knowledge acquired should allow them to intervene also in the training and research processes peculiar to the aforementioned field.
The Master of Science in Nursing and Obstetric Sciences aims to offer a training that allows graduates of the class, within the specific professional figure, to:
- to understand, by means of epidemiological methods, the health needs relating to the sphere of vital criticality and the socio-cultural factors influencing them for the purposes of programming services;
- apply the methodological foundations of scientific research to the assistance and organisation of relevant services;
- to manage working groups and strategies to foster multi-professional and organisational integration processes;
- acquire advanced care skills for the critically critical person, both in hospital and in the territory, in relation to the clinical situation, gender, age and ethnicity.
In addition to the study curriculum, there is a clinical internship within the area of critical life, in which they can develop advanced skills in the field of care, in particular with regard to the methods of assessment addressed to the person assisted in critical situations, the use of technology, medicine in situations of scarce resources.

Students have to Know main physiology knowledges of neonatal and pediatric age, main diseases and treatments in neonatal and pediatric age treated during the previous three years of the Systematic Pediatric Course.

Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.

Written test Multiple choice questions.
We will consider the test sufficient if the student answered correctly 60% of the questions. The test will be 1/2 hour and the final score will be
expressed of thirty.
The student must demonstrate knowledge of some emerging problems of neonatal and childhood age.

Pediatric and neonatal evaluation. Physiological characteristics of infants and children and how these affect clinical assessment and management, methods of physical, neurological and respiratory assessment, monitoring of vital signs and clinical conditions. Advanced life support in neonatology and pediatrics. Airway management and mechanical ventilation, surfactant use, neonatal and pediatric resuscitation procedures, invasive monitoring. Management of pediatric emergencies. Ethical aspects and family emotional support. Empathic communication and support to parents and families, psychological aspects of the care of clinical pediatric patients, ethical aspects in the treatment of critical newborn and pediatric patients, support in end-of-life decisions and palliative care. Gender differences will be highlighted where appropriate.

Knowledge and understanding. Student has to demonstrate knowledge of covered issues and ability to use the most suitable techniques taking into account the age and the clinical condition of the newborn and the child.
