Course Contents
The course is divided into two parts: one dedicated to the fundamental concepts of radiobiology, and the other to radiation protection, covering both general principles and legislative regulations. The syllabus includes the interactions of ionizing radiation with cells and tissues; DNA damage and repair mechanisms; radiosensitivity; the linear-quadratic model; early and late tissue effects; deterministic and stochastic effects; ICRP documents; Euratom directives; and legislation regarding radiation protection.

The module aims to provide fundamental knowledge and skills in radiobiology to facilitate an understanding of the use of ionizing radiation.
The biological basis of early and late side effects is outlined.
Incidents in diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiotherapy are addressed.
Legislative aspects of radiation protection are also covered.

Detailed Syllabus
Radiobiology. General overview of interactions between radiation and the human body.
Physical dose and biological parameters (DI, LET, RBE, equivalent dose).
Radiation protection. Review of physics and radiobiology concepts.
Main effects of ionizing radiation on tissues and organs. Natural background radiation and population dose. Worker classification and dose limits. Worker health surveillance. Accidents involving patients, staff, and the external environment in diagnostic radiology, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine.
Patient radiation protection in diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiotherapy: principles of justification, optimization, and dose limitation.
Legislative aspects: scope of application; health protection for workers, the general public, and patients
