Starting from an introduction to fundamental concepts such as epistemology, scientific theory, and discipline, the course presents the epistemological foundations of nursing as a discipline with its own autonomous epistemological status, in which scientific knowledge (within the dimension of care) and humanistic knowledge (within the dimension of caring) are integrated.

The course aims to provide students with a knowledge of the fundamental concepts of epistemology, understood as the theory of science, and, on this basis, to develop their understanding of the distinctive epistemological status of nursing as a discipline situated at the intersection of scientific and humanistic knowledge.

The final assessment consists of a mixed-format written examination comprising 20 multiple-choice questions and one open-ended question. The final grade is awarded on a 30-point scale, with one point assigned for each correct answer.

1. Fundamental Concepts of Epistemology: a. Science and the problem of demarcation. b. Models, theories, and disciplines. c. Scientific paradigms and scientific revolutions. 2. The Discipline of Nursing: a. Nursing as a science: cure, its objects of inquiry, and its methods. b. Care as a humanistic discipline: caregiving and knowledge of the person.

Basic Level: By the end of the course, students are expected to have acquired an adequate understanding of the fundamental concepts of epistemology and of the epistemological foundations of the nursing discipline.
Advanced Level: By the end of the course, students are expected to have acquired a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts of epistemology and of the epistemological foundations of the nursing discipline, and to demonstrate a good capacity for critical reflection on these concepts.
