Course Contents
The course aims to provide a basic knowledge of industrial biotechnology. In particular, the characteristics of enzymes as catalysts in organic synthesis will be described and several examples of industrial processes of biotransformation applied to the production of biologically active molecules will be illustrated. Learning Outcomes
To provide students with basic knowledge on the main characteristics of enzymes and their applications as catalysts in organic synthesis
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: The student will acquire and learn to use an appropriate technical-scientific vocabulary in relation to the topics covered in the course. The course also aims to develop the ability to learn independently about the topics of the course and the critical sense (autonomy of judgment) that allows the student to hold discussions on issues related to the topics covered.

Organic Chemistry I
Teaching Methods
Lectures in classroom, exercises, and classroom discussion. Topics of particular interest will be explored with critical reading and commentary of scientific publications.
Additional Information
During the course, at the end of each key topic, the students will be involved in the critical analysis of examples of industrial processes.

Detailed Syllabus
Biotransformations: definitions and characteristics. Comparison between chemical synthesis and biocatalyzed reactions.
Enzyme structure, functions, mechanisms, and scope in organic synthesis. Specificity, selectivity of enzymes and methods for the study of enzymatic properties.
Main classes of enzymes used in organic synthesis and in the chemical industry:
Oxidoreductases
-Transferases
-Hydrolases
-Lyases
-Isomerases
-Ligases
Biotransformations to produce products of pharmaceutical relevance: examples of industrial processes.
Expected Learning Outcomes
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The student will acquire basic knowledge on biotechnological applications in organic synthesis. In particular, he will learn to understand the main properties of enzymes and will acquire knowledge on their application as catalysts in the organic synthesis of molecules of biopharmaceutical interest.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The student will be provided with the basic knowledge that will enable him to understand the main characteristics and applications of enzymes as catalysts in the biopharmaceutical industry to make him able to identify the best synthetic strategy for a given chemical transformation.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS: At the end of the course the student will be able to use an appropriate vocabulary in relation to the topics covered in the course, will develop the ability to learn new knowledge using independently the material provided to identify synthetic strategies and will acquire meaning critical to make comparative choices and express judgments knowing how to support discussions on issues related to the topics covered.
